Theater Review: New American Shakespeare Tavern in Atlanta, Georgia

FANDD
The New American Shakespeare Tavern is hard to miss - it is the Tudor landmark on Peachtree Street. The differences from other Atlanta theaters do not stop at the façade. The theater was built as a place where patrons could become a part of plays instead of just watching them. With its casual atmosphere and reasonable prices, it succeeds.

The first thing you will notice as you enter the New American Shakespeare Tavern is that it looks like a tavern with a stage. Patrons sit at hand-made wood tables on the floor. The stage is bare compared to other productions.

There are three different seating sections - main floor, box seats and balcony. You will want to arrive early to pick your seat. Within your section, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The floor seats are the most expensive and closest to the stage. It comprises of tables where you get a chance to talk and enjoy yourself with friends.

The "box" seats are more intimate. They are situated on the perimeter of the floor. Couples may like these seats the best.

If you are single, though, consider the balcony. They may be the cheapest seats in the house, but veterans know that they can also be the best. If you sit along the rail, you can not beat the view. The only problem is that you are not at a table so socializing with a group before the show will be difficult.

The atmosphere is relaxed. Most people are in jeans. For the performance I attended, a couple of the people bussing tables also served as extras in the play.

The tavern opens an hour and fifteen minutes before show time for meals. Although meals are not included with the ticket price, the cost is reasonable. A small plate will run you around five dollars. Large plate prices average around ten dollars. The current menu along with prices and nutritional information is on the web site of the tavern.

The service is cafeteria style. You order at the kitchen in the back, grab some silverware and head off to your table. Volunteers will take your tray once you have unloaded your dishes. When you are finished, volunteers will also clear your table.

Be sure to save room for dessert. Hot apple crisp is made fresh during the first act of the play and available at intermission. This dish is rumored to be the best in Atlanta. In addition, it is big enough to share with a friend.

If you are watching your budget, you can still enjoy an evening out at the New American Shakespeare Tavern. Check out the preview performances for discounted tickets. Discounted parking is available across the street at Crawford Long Hospital if you show them your ticket stub.

The New American Shakespeare Tavern is definitely a good place to check out for a wonderful evening.
