Their Brain Cells!

JoAnn Selke
The four children sat around the small table, engulfed in their handheld video games. The caregiver warned them that the games were slowly pulling brain cells out of their heads. Of course, the children laughed and the caregiver was just trying to get a laugh. Little did they know how much truth was to that warning.

The lights flickered, but that did not break the children's concentration. All of a sudden the lights went out completely. The children continued playing their games as the caregiver watched in amazement. She could not believe they did not notice the lights had gone out.

A few moments later, she noticed a glowing light around them. At first, it appeared to be the lights from their handheld games, but then she realized it was coming from above them. Slowly, streams of what appeared to be smoke started flowing from their heads up to the glowing light above them.

The caregiver blinked her eyes a few times and shook her head. She wondered if she was letting her imagination run wild. Suddenly, the lights were back on and everything looked normal. She laughed at herself for being so over-dramatic.

The following day, the children sat around the table with their games again. This time, the caregiver just sat back and watched. Slowly, she could see the glowing light appear above their heads and the streams of smoke pulling brain cells out one by one.

Another group of children entered the room and the caregiver got busy showing them around. They did not bring in any games, so she offered coloring pages, puzzles, balls, and other toys.

Suddenly, the lights went out and the new group of children screamed. The caregiver reassured them and calmed them down. A few moments later, they all noticed that the other children did not budge from their seats; they were not bothered at all by the lights going out.

Then the glowing light appeared above their heads. The new group of children all pointed in amazement and the caregiver knew she was not imagining things. Slowly, the smoke rose from each child's head as brain cells were lost.
