Theme Decorating : How to Do it Right

M. Kaye Hash
Theme decorating can be a lot of fun and can look very cute. Who hasn't fallen in love with a little princess room or grinned at a little boy's fireman room? You can have a room everyone is talking about when you decorate with a theme but you want to do it right, as there is a fine line in theme decorating between done and overdone.

Theme Decorating - Children's Rooms

Theme decorating is best done in children's rooms. Children live in imaginary worlds and creating one of those world inside their bedroom can be a great joy to a child. Choose a theme the child enjoys, such as wizards or sports, but take the age and changing tastes of the child into account. If your child wants a Disney theme for their room, you may want to add the characters in with a bedspread or curtains as these items can be easily changed out when the child grows up or moves on to another theme.

Theme Decorating - Don't Make Your House One Big Theme

Theme decorating is supposed to be fun, it is not supposed to be the only thing people think about as they walk through your home. A house filled with hundreds of pieces of cow décor is not the right way to go about theme decorating.

If you want to spread your theme around your house, do it in small ways. Perhaps you want a beach theme in your house. You could paint beach colors in your living room, add curtains with light shell image in your kitchen, and an aquarium in your office for a subtle them across your entire house.

Theme Decorating - Don't Go Overboard

The worst of theme decorating occurs when someone attaches the theme to every item in the room. The John Deere kitchen theme is popular but loses its affect when everything from the curtains, to the dishes, to the rug has the John Deere logo on it. A theme is often meant to be a little quirky but decorating everything with one thought in mind can be overwhelming when walking in a room.

Theme Decorating - Choose Something Broad

A broad theme when decorating will be easier to work with, and will give you more options, that a specific theme. Instead of a ceramic cowboy theme, go for the broader Western theme. This way you can incorporate a variety of decorating options. For instance, a Western them allows you to add in leather, metal stars, and southwest designs.

Theme decorating is an easy way to design a room and it allows someone with limited decorating skill to put together a room. Just be careful that the fun of the theme doesn't take over the room or the house.
