What we must recognize is this is not universal. There are still many with jobs, not in foreclosure and doing well....many.
Even those in trouble are sill spending some money. The issue and question is what are you doing to attract business?
I see far too many businesses either cutting back on their advertising and marketing budgets, eliminating them completely or wasting money on non productive campaigns. Some are using the same tactics and material they have used for years and are experiencing limited return... sometimes almost none.
Times have changed, there is business out there but you must go out and get it, aggressively, actively, focused and with determination and a recognition that you need new tools, new approaches, new methods to pierce the barriers preventing customers from shopping in your business.
Things have changed dramatically; your marketing techniques must also change.
You must be different, interesting, attractive, and current. You must reflect the changing attitudes in the market. The market wants, no make that, demands quality and a good deal. They will spend if you deliver the right message. Small stores can now compete effectively with large stores, competitive differences are huge, service is more important than ever, choice and variety rules... but in the end it is a combination of many factors that bring your clients back to you to spend... not just price and discount.
Dare to be different, dare to be aggressive, talk to your clients with a new message, and tell them why they should shop with you. Tell them your competitive advantage. Market to your existing customer base, your best source of business and often overlooked. Ask for referrals, be aggressive but with a message, and it is not all price.
Use humor, be outrageous, and use sex if it can apply, be different, but tell the message.
Passive same old story is a waste of time and money.
The world has changed, the economy has changed, the buyers' attitude and habits are changing... you too must change to meet the challenge.
There is business, there are customers, and you want more of what is available... You must outdo your competition, and do that with a newly thought out campaign.
Waiting for the customer to show up and buy will not work. It never did but now it definitely will not. Creating relationships and then selling works, figure out how to do it and then implement effectively.
No matter what your business may be... it's a war, you must fight aggressively to win.
Go get them.
