The side that calls themselves pro-life wants to see all abortions outlawed as they focus on the fetus as a living being and the procedure being murder. This is fine, yet it most likely isn't going to happen. Their shouts are going with the wind and all they end up with is sore vocal chords. They do set up their memorials for the unborn victims, yet in reality, these memorials are just as much a symbol of their failure as it is to the "atrocities" of the opponents. These people spend their time protesting, rather than doing something that actually bears fruit in the situation.
The pro-abortion side is really better called the pro-choice side. I have matured to realize this after reading where an unidentified individual standing on that view said that no one is really pro-abortion. This, folks, is where we can find common ground. The pro-choice side is simply defending the right of women to have the option of abortion available in a clean, sanitary environment, as prior to the legalization, they were happening in the behind-the-scenes filth. So these people would still prefer to see the number of abortions performed dwindle as well. But they are just like the other side, spending their valuable time in protest form, rather than in something more fruitful.
The results of most abortions again include dead fetuses and women in remorse for having to resort to this avenue. If both sides could unite in the cause of preventing any further grief, more could be done in the elimination of the supposed need for having this procedure as an option. There are many people eager to adopt due to the fact they can't have children of their own. Also, more pregnancy support and other parental assistance centers could be funded and operated, if protesters would put the signs down, get off the sidewalks, and go do this work for the cause they believe in so much. The charitable efforts of private citizens do way more good and are way more effective than any government-run program.
This nation did have a prior issue that truly divided it, and that was of course, slavery. It took a bloody civil war that wiped out a good portion of the young men in that generation in order to actually stop that horrible institution. And of course, we are still feeling the effects of it even today in racism and civil rights issues. The abortion crisis doesn't have to be resolved in this manner. All it could take is for some people to put their strong feelings into more action.
