There is Danger in the World of Spirits

The Unicorn

Pat Lunsford
Keith was a widower living alone on the outskirts of town. It was midday and he was working at his desk on his second novel about witches and demons when out of nowhere a huge black horse strolled leisurely by the window. Rising from his chair, he looked to see where it went but it was nowhere in sight.

It must've gone around to the front he thought as he made his way through the house to the living room. Brushing the curtain aside, he looked out through the window and raised a brow looking at what appeared to be a black unicorn in his front yard.

Believing it to be some kind of joke, he went to the front door, stepped out on the porch and called out, "Hey! I thought unicorns were white!" He figured that whoever attached the horn to the animal's forehead was probably sitting in the woods having a good laugh.

"Don't you people have anything better to do? You've got five minutes to get this horse out of my yard before I call the cops!"

Going back inside, he slammed the door behind him and went back to the window. The big black horse just grazed tranquilly around the front yard. Keith watched him for a few minutes then he picked up the phone and called the police.

The sheriff listened patiently as he told him about the horse in his front yard and how it was made up to look like a unicorn. "Whoever's behind this foolishness is going to pay for any damage done to my lawn and they better hope I don't step in anything when I go out there!"

"I don't know whose it could be," the sheriff said. Nobody's got horses in that area that know of. Give me your number. If I'm not mistaken I think you got some new neighbors. Maybe the horse belongs to them. I'll get back to you as soon as I find out who it belongs to."

More than an hour had passed and Keith still hadn't heard back from the sheriff. He stood at the front window staring out at the horse and despite his anger he had to admit that it really was a magnificent looking animal. It was huge- bigger than a Clydesdale, burnished black, lean, and muscular with the silkiest long tail and mane he had ever seen on a horse.

Curiosity finally getting the better of him, he went out the door and down the steps to steal a closer look. The enormous horse raised his head and Keith froze in his tracts staring into glowing amber eyes.

Absolute terror swept over him as he realized that what he was seeing was definitely not a horse. Backing slowly up the steps, he went back into the house closing the door quickly behind him. Hurrying to the window he pulled the curtains back. It was at the window!

Keith jumped back with a shout as glowing yellow eyes stared at him with such intensity that he thought they might burn right through the glass. Heart pounding, he glanced across the room at the attic steps but his legs were shaking so bad he didn't know if he could make it.

Gathering all of his strength, he ran toward the steps, glancing back as his hand touched the railing. It was in the living room! The massive beast was actually in his house not five away!

Panic gripped him as he tried to climb the attic stairs, falling and stumbling to the top. He grabbed the handle. The door was jammed!

Struggling with the attic door he glanced back and to his astonishment; smoke began pouring from the nostrils of the huge unicorn and was rapidly filling the room.

Pounding the attic door with his fist he cried out, "Oh God! Oh God, help! Somebody help me!" Then with all of his might he slammed his shoulder against the attic door. It flew open. He scrambled in and closed the door.

Breathing profusely, he scanned the attic watching for the creature to appear knowing that there was no place else to run. But as he looked around he realized that it didn't matter anymore. Smoke had begun to seep through every crack and within moments he was gasping for air.

Not knowing how long he had been unconscious, Keith opened his eyes and sat up quickly. The smoke was gone and there was no sign of the unicorn. Maybe it left, he thought with a ray of hope.

Then he heard a sound below and his heart began to pound. It's still here, he thought as tears filled his eyes. Then there was another sound- the voice of a man calling out, "Hello in there! Anybody home?"

Hesitating, not knowing whether to believing his ears or not, Keith stayed perfectly still.

"Hello?" the voice called out again. "It's the Weston County Sheriff's office responding to your call."

Keith threw open the attic door and saw the sheriff standing in the front doorway but in his haste to be free of the terror, he fell headlong down the attic steps.

"Good GOD, man!" the sheriff shouted, moving quickly through the house to him. "What happened? Is somebody up there? Were you pushed?"

Grabbing hold of his arm, Keith clung to him like a frightened child.

A deputy entered the room. "What happened? What's wrong with him?"

"I don't know," the sheriff said, "but he acts like he's been through some kind of hell. He's shaking like a leaf. Go check around outside and I'll have a look in here."

They didn't find anything. There were no hoof prints, droppings, or proof of any kind that there had ever been a horse on or near the property. Keith left the house in the hands of a realtor and moved to town.

Is it possible that his writing and research on demons and witches could have opened a door into the world of evil spirits?

The story you have just read is a fabrication but just like the exorcist movie, it demonstrates the grave danger involved in anything associated with the spiritual world such as Ouija boards; which is how the little girl in the movie supposedly became possessed.

Unicorns are usually associated with the spirit world. The Bible warns us to stay away from the spiritual realm because we have no idea with whom we are dealing, nor do we realize the power associated with it.

Jesus Christ cast many devils from people during His ministry but not from believers because the Holy Spirit indwells all who belong to Christ and "...greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." (1John 4:4)

You do a good job at building suspense; I also love your description of the horse!!
