There is No Such Thing as Pro-Life or Pro-Choice
Defining Pro-Abortion for a New Generation of Abortion Debates
Because the arguments against Pro-Life activists seem heavier and more complicated on the surface, I will focus on Pro-Choice activists first.
My biggest problem with sitting on the Choice side of the fence has more to do with the word itself - CHOICE. While, technically it is an accurate representation of their beliefs, I don't believe that it paints a concise picture.
Are we taking a test for biology or are dealing with a delicate human life?
It's also important to remember that Choice doesn't really reflect a choice; it's an advocate for the legalization of abortions. I've not ever considered an abortion nor do I ever imagine I will, but I think it's important to rally for the women who take that difficult journey into what these so-called Life activists consider Hell.
I admire any woman who has the courage to stand up for herself and get an abortion. It takes a lot of strength and confidence to take the trip. Until you've experienced it yourself, you have absolutely no idea what it's like to fear becoming a mother. Raising a child is one of the scariest things I've done in my life, so I empathize with any woman who has had an abortion.
Keeping that in mind, remember that it really is no choice to get an abortion. In some cases, it's a sacrifice and in others, it's being responsible and intelligent enough to do what's right for your body and mind. The fetus probably won't care anyway.
I used to be Pro-Choice. I am now Pro-Abortion.
What about the Pro-Life activists?
I think the most significant argument against being on the side of Life is that you are not really rallying for life. What you are rallying for is your religious views. I was once a naïve Pro-Life activist. I understand where you're coming from to an extent, but I was able to do one important thing. I opened my mind and was able to see how destructive we've let our religions become, particularly Christianity.
Being Pro-Life is a religious view and I feel that religion has absolutely no place in our laws. Why is it so hard to grasp that reality? We've let our religious leaders fool us into thinking that there is one true God and that everyone on the planet should obey accordingly. I have news for you - there are as many different religions in this world as there are different types of people. And, you know what? Each respective person thinks that their religion is the ultimate truth. You're fooling yourself if you think it is.
I'm not saying that it's wrong to have a belief and stick to it. That's respectable. But, what I'm trying to communicate is that we need to stop trying to force others to worship a God they don't believe in.
The biggest problem with abortion these days is that the religious aspect of it is no longer relevant and it really never should have been in the first place.
Now, what about this word Life? Sure. Fine. Great. You believe that every potential human being has a right to life. But, what about after it's born? I see very few Pro-Life activists actively concerned about what happens to the child after it's born. Hey, if you want to be a baby-making factory, that's fine. But, not every woman is mentally or physically capable of that.
Another important thing to consider is the medical aspect of it. Thousands of women die every year due to complications during pregnancy or child birth. If you refuse to accept that abortions are beneficial, then you are basically saying that these mothers deserve to die just so that their unborn child can live. It's a dangerous stance to take.
If you're going to be crazy enough to deny someone the right to a medical procedure based on your outdated religion, grow some courage and be anti-abortion. Because, really..we all know that you don't care about the fetus' life.
Stand up for how you really feel - be pro- or anti-abortion. Let the world know where you really stand. That way we can get rid of the empty euphemisms and start making some real progress in the abortion debate.

Post a CommentWhat a heartfelt article. Well said. If pro lifers were really about the children instead of just sex, then they would support birth control and planned parenthood. Read: PLANNED parenthood. Isn't that the point? They have done more to prevent abortions than all the prolifers put together.
The only true selfless choice is Adoption. Why isn't anyone advocating for that? I am from a family of 19 all adopted. That's more responsible and selfless than abortions in my mind.
'outdated as the religious motivations of each side'... what?...
You admire woman who stand up for themselves and have an abortion?... Are you out of your mind? When has killing your children been something to be admired?
Fear of becoming a mother?... People have been having children for a long time... that is what the family structure is all about... love and support. Marriage and family means not having to raise children by yourself.
It's easy to have an abortion... that's why 50 million murdered babies... abortions, have been committed since the Roe v. Wade opinion in the U.S. alone. What seems to be hard is for men and woman who don't want children to refrain from having SEX... the result of having SEX is babies. That is its intent. If you don't want children, don't have SEX. If you have SEX, get pregnant, and don't want the child... do the responsible and right thing... birth the child and give the child to a couple who does want the child. A couple who have the best means
Pro-abortion has a far worse connotation than pro-choice. Pro-abortion makes it sound like you are randomly encouraging abortion and few people are like that. The terms are, admittedly, stupid, but pro-abortion is far, far worse.
What gives any of us the right to play God and destroy an embryo? I know it is back to religious beliefs, however, people all the time are convicted of murder of another human life!! Yet, so many of us say it is okay to destroy human life just because we can!
I disagree with your take on this... however, I do understand what you are saying about the other blantly hard issues that pregnant mothers face. Cyn
A very interesting analysis. I agree that many people who claim to be pro-life base their decision on religious beliefs, but not all. There are just as many non-Christians who are anti-abortion. The same argument holds true in reverse. For example, being an atheist or agnostic does not necessarily mean a person is pro-abortion. Christians as a group are very vocal regarding the issue, but they are certainly not the only people who oppose abortion. Abortion is the act of terminating a pregnancy. The terms we use to describe our response to that act don't change the end result. What does hinder the discussion is blind assumption and stereotyping from both sides.
Ummm. Wow Tina. This is an incredibly powerful & controversial piece. Kuddo's to you, for having the strength to put your views out there for the world to see. I admire your courage, and whether or not I agree, I have the utmost respect for the manner in which you've presented your case.
Suppose there were a law permitting parents to kill their daughter if she ended up pregnant out of marriage. If I opposed this law on the grounds that that pregnant girl has the right to live, would you jump to the conclusion that I didn't care for her life at all and was merely trying to impose my moral code on her parents, who really SHOULD have the right to kill their daughter? I mean, hey, they're going to have to shell out extra money to pay for her as she goes through pregnancy, and probably end up buying a bunch of stuff for the kid; she'll be a continual burden on them. And the social stigma - phew! No parents should have to live through that. ...The truth is, the abortion debate collapses to a single issue: whether or not that fetus is a person with the right to live. Visit Stand to Reason at str.org and cut through the pointless arguments.
A whole lot of those on the "pro-choice" camp would consider themselves "pro-abortion", but they'll never say it. I believe the reason for the term pro-choice is only as a counter to the pro-life side. It wouldn't be considered very PC to call it pro-abortion, even if that's what it is. The pro-lifers would spin it out of control and just garner more support for their cause if the opposing side was seen as people who push abortion, and killing fetuses, as I'm sure they would say.
Were there no opposition to abortion, then you could call it pro-abortion, but then we wouldn't need a term for it.
Really made me think about my own point of view.
