And when it comes to the closet there is always cash to be made.
At the end of each season, I remove the clothing from my closet, and sort it into tubs for storage, junk or sale. When I come across an article of clothing and realise I hadn't worn it all season, I have to wonder why I bought it in the first place!
Tub number 1 may be in need of some minor repair. If this is the case I may well put it aside for pet bedding since my neighbor objects to a yard full of windblown straw on his verandah, understandably. Anything else may be kept for polishing rags or donated for quilt projects for the local elderly community and those lovely, smiling Church ladies.
Along to tub number 2...
It's here we make some money. I visit the local consignment store with my wonderfully overflowing treasure chest. The store prices the items themselves and I am happy to collect half of the proceeds. This may sound like a hefty commission, but compared to the expensive overheads and time it would take to run a store of my own, I can hardly complain. Once I have delivered my goodies, they remain on sale for 30 days, at which time they are discounted. It is then they are returned to the shelf for a further 30 days. At the beginning of each month I receive a handsome check.
There is also strategy involved. I take a percentage of my earnings, and look for items which have been deeply discounted as they are approaching the end of their 60 day 'shelf life'.
I may end up with 4 lovely cosy sweaters for $5 or $6. I immediatley store them for my next winter's inventory. At this point they have been out of the store and not seen for a whole year when I return them to be resold at full price.Store all of your items in a spare room closet and protect them carefully from pests. You will soon find that you will have enough rotating stock to keep a continuous stream of paychecks coming the whole year round.
For the balance of my earnings; I invest 50% and save the other half for my annual overseas vacation to visit family.
So next time you're dreading cleaning out your closet, you may wish to get 2 tubs and convert one of them into cold cash.
