There's More to Me Than This

H. Kris Thomas
There's more to me than my everyday
Rising at sunrise and falling back to sleep again
Until the alarm rings

And there's more to me than the way I floss
Or brush these pearly whites
The way I do this unruly hair

There's no shadow that follows me
Taking notes of my sighs
Or analyzing the way I make my way
Down the freeway
I make my way
That's what I do but
There's more to me than this

And there's more to me than meets the eye
It's not always a genuine smile
On my face
Suppose it was a grimace
Discomfort in the routine of the everyday

Tell me I am pleasant
A joyous reflection
A gracious peace offering sent by God
I feel the same about you
As much as I wish these things could be written of me
I know the truth
There's much more to me than this.

What a lovely piece! (And good luck with the gluten free diet if that's what ends up happening.) :)
