There's a Star on the Avenida Santa Lucia

A Triumph of Hope Over Adversity

There is a very unique video store in Antigua, but this isn't about the store. The 26 year old transplanted New Yorker, Jennifer Cernikovsky is the story.

She graduated from high school in 2003, a feat by itself, from an upstate small town in the Catskills and then moved to Guatemala. Her parents, Tomas and Barbara, are part-time residents here, where they're involved in a local dining club and bridge society.

Jenny, as she's known, opened Jenny Star DVD in 2003 and it has grown and outlasted any other video store in town. With over 2641 titles in stock, fresh movies, theme rentals, home delivery and the best of service (a miracle in itself) she has prospered, against all odds. She's always liked movies and boasts of having met Peter Boyle and Art Garfunkle. Opening a movie rental store was a natural decision.

She has two employees, Helen behind the front desk and Juan who opens the store, restocks the shelves and keeps an eye on everything else. Jenny? She laughs and greets customers. She's an inspiration and a most unique person: the odds of doing what she's accomplished defy common sense and all preconceived notions of being handicapped. Handicapped? I don't think so. The angels ride on her shoulders.
