These Football Players Score More Than Touchdowns

This is an Example Worth Following

Lee Hansen
If you were to ask a child who they want to be like when they grow up, you're sure to get a variety of answers. Some might want to be like their parents, others might name a movie star. There would be those who would answer by giving the name of a famous athlete.

But I would like to offer up a much-deserved round of applause to the football team at St. Mary's High School in Independence, MO. These players would be good examples of children to admire and look up to.

RAH-RAH

This past week, players from their football team spent some time reading to students at Nativity of Mary School in Independence, MO. It is part of a community outreach program. You can imagine how starry-eyed these kindergarten through 2nd grade students reacted when they saw these well-built athletes. Spending time with them was an added bonus.

SEEDS ARE PLANTED

While athletes often don't like to be referred to as role models, the fact is that students often emulate what they see them doing in the public. Because this is often the case, the unknowing role they play in the lives of children should not be taken lightly. As a result of endeavors such as this, a possible seed is being planted in the minds of the children. You can't deny that sports stars are very influential.

AN INCENTIVE

Students were given tee shirts promoting the Reading and Reach Out program. I wouldn't be surprised if the players autographed them.

CONCLUSION

It is so encouraging to read the positive things that young people are doing in their corner of the world. And their participation in a program such as this is sure to score big points for the players, students, parents and community alike. That is worth more than a touchdown on any day.

What great examples those athletes are! Much better than some pros who display bad tempers, drug abuse, and inhumane treatment of animals.

Lee, what these football players were doing was mentoring to the next generation of role models :) May these "seeds" sprout. What a beautiful article, thanks for sharing this :) cheers!
