I slid backwards, I fell off the horse, I returned to my old ways. What ever words you wish to use, like one addicted to drugs, I've slipped again.
It started over the past weekend, an over night trip in our motorhome just made tracking my food intake inconvenient. Staying at the Casino with it's Easter Buffet was too tempting, the food was delicious. I started the new week with good intentions, but never made it for my daily walk.
Yesterday I have no excuse. A trip to Walmart to simply pick up medication went awry. Why I made a pass down the junk food aisle I just don't know. Somehow that tube of Pringles reduced fat chips fell into my shopping cart.
Knowing I had a package of fresh soft hotdog buns and a package of Oscar Mayer 98% Fat Free hotdogs waiting at home, I craved the saltiness of some good potato chips. Opening the canister in the car, 3/4 of the tube was gone before I got home.
I polished off the rest with a couple hotdogs complete with mustard and onions. Yes it was good, and at least everything was low fat, but forget calorie counting for the day... I had gone off the wagon.
Supper was even worse. I found a tempting recipe for Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy. Of course I tried to lighten it up some by replacing the ground beef with ground turkey.
Because all I had was skim milk, for the gravy I substituted a can of evaporated milk for part of the 3 cups of milk it called for.
When it was all simmering in the skillet I thought the color was a bit pale, and the gravy wasn't thickening enough for my taste. I added a simple packet of Walmart's brown gravy mix which did the trick.
The only other change was I substituted chicken bullion cubes for the listed beef bullion cubes.
It turned out fantastic. A nice thick, stick to your ribs, gravy over a couple meat patties and a medium baked potato. A healthy portion of fresh steamed asparagus and dinner was complete.
When I pushed myself away from the table, I knew I was in trouble. There was no way I could eat this good and not pay for it in the morning.
Once again this morning I pricked my finger as I went through my rise and shine routine. I just don't understand it. I haven't walked for 3 days, and still my blood sugar was only 71. No complaining to be heard from me.
Now stepping on the scale showed the damage. Back up to 240 lbs, all my progress last week down the drain.
I promise to try harder starting right now. I know conquering my blood sugar for the long term is hinged upon weight lose. It's hell when you not only enjoy good food, but are quite capable of cooking it too.
