To start out it depends on whether you are going to be using a boat or fishing old school from the banks. I'm going to say you are fishing from the banks. The things that all fishermen need to start are a rod and reel of course. You can't really catch anything with your rod. After you have got yourself a rod and reel now you need to get yourself a tackle box and fill it up with lures that you have and really anything else you think you might need. I carry pretty much every thing in my box from lures to knives and pens.
Now you got your gear you're all set. Now you need to pick a good location to fish. If you're heading to the lake, look for cover in the water like lily pads or brush in the water. Fish use things like sticks in the water as cover.
A key factor that determines your fishing trip is the weather. Take a look at the clouds or are there even any clouds in the sky. The temperature and the temperature of the water will play a big part also in what kind of baits to use and how deep to fish them. If it's a cloudy kind of rainy day out try using bait that has a lot of white to it. I have found that on days like these the white color bait seems to do the trick.
It's always good to be fishing for a certain type of fish. It kind of sets a foundation. If you know what kind of fish you're going for you will have a good idea of where to find them and what to use to catch them. One thing I would like to mention, fish are like people in a way. They don't eat 24/7. They eat and when they are full they will just swim around and won't bite on anything so there will be times when you will throw your bait in the water and for an hour or two not catch anything but then all of a sudden you start catching a few close in time. It's because they are hungry again and your bait is what they see. Bottom line is if you want to catch the fish you have to be patient.
Another thing I would like to point out, when fishing patience is the key. Sometimes my buddy and I will go to the river and he will fish his bait real slow and I fish about a medium speed. Now I always catch fish but he catches the bigger ones. What I'm saying is the slower you fish you bait the better chance you have to get a hold of one of those big fish. If you can fish your bait slow and not loose patience then you have everything you need. I hope my tips work and good luck to all fishermen.
