Things I Am Thankful for in 2009

In a Trying Year, There Are Many Things for Me to Be Thankful For

In 2009, the world shifted. In the United States, we have a new President and Administration. We're looked at more admiringly by the rest of the world since GWB left office. Whether President Obama turns out to be the promised change so many sought is yet to be determined, but the hope and inspiration he provided to countless hundreds of millions can't be ignored. I am thankful for this event in our nations's history.

In the State of Nebraska, for the first time in history, we split our electoral vote. Nebraska has been a one party state for decades. The Republican party has cemented its hold on this state by holding so many of the elected offices, and legislating away opposition. We have the quaint unicam, in which only one body creates the laws, with no secondary or upper house to review laws. In a state with one Republican body drafting laws to cater to the vocal hard core conservative base, and a Republican rubber stamp governor, we pass laws that should never have even been brought up for debate in a more rational society. But, in a solid red state, one district actually voted for President Obama. I am thankful that the winds of change managed to blow across this state.

In my life this year, things have been in a state of turmoil. Events that were a long time coming, finally happened. It's been a difficult time, but throughout it all, I have friends and family that have been a rock solid support for me. They've been there for advice, have listened to my gripes and concerns, and helped me take my mind off of things. For friends and family, I am thankful.
