Things to Avoid After LASIK Surgery

DJG08
LASIK eye surgery or Laser in-situ keratomileusis, is a popular surgical approach used to correct vision in people who are have eye imperfections. What is usually done is that a laser is used to correct imperfections in the cornea. The laser can fix astigmatism, near and far sightedness among others.

LASIK eye surgery is safe, and you can generally expect good results and quick recovery. It can be done in as fast as fifteen minutes depending on the ease or difficulty of the surgery. But like all types of surgery, there may be risks and drawbacks. This is why doctors usually have a list of items that one should avoid right after having LASIK eye surgery.

After having LASIK eye surgery, expect to have some protective covering over the affected eye. Sometimes shades or dark glasses are enough, or possibly you may be asked to use an eye patch. Also expect to be prescribed some antibiotics to avoid infection. Religiously use the prescribed medicines and take them on time. Eye drops are also prescribed to moisten the eye since the eye is usually dry and itchy after LASIK surgery. This moisture makes one less prone to the itch and the urge to scratch and rub the affected eye is lessened.

One of the worst things you can do after LASIK eye surgery is rub and scratch your eyes as this rubbing can easily damage the already sensitive cornea.

For the first day after LASIK surgery you should just relax your eyes and allow them to recover. This is best done by just closing your eyes.

Avoid taking showers, and just take baths after surgery. You should avoid spraying streaming water or any fluid directly into the eyes. Try not to go to windy and dusty places where it becomes very likely that some unwanted dust and debris could enter the eyes, as these could easily result in complications.

Bright lights, eye strain through reading and watching the television, using the computer and staring at the monitor should be avoided. This may cause some strain on the eyes, and can result in unwanted headaches.

Forego any strenuous activities like lifting weights, exercising, and difficult household chores for the time being, as these could result in some eye strain. Remember the eyes are the windows to our soul, and caring for them after undergoing LASIK surgery is the best way to avoid any complications that may occur.
