Don't Try These When You Job Search
After 20 years in my career as a social worker I found myself looking for work. Nothing in my field was coming my way and so I had to think "out of the box". Here are some things I tried that didn't work. Knowing them may save you some time in your search.
- I decided to join the military. I figured with all the nice young people they have they might need a dorm mother. Not one branch said they needed one of those.
- I tried to go to jail. I threw a brick into a store window hoping to get arrested for 30 days. I figured I could get my teeth fixed, have some medical tests run, and make some new friends while they paid for my room and board. The judge couldn't bring himself to incarcerate a lovely lady like me and sent me home with a warning. I may consider this again in the future.
- I noticed a sign in front of a men's club advertising for dancers. I applied. I can dance. But the pole was so cold. They were afraid I'd get sick. But they were very nice about it.
- I thought I had a great idea when I applied to become an astronaut. I figured they could conduct all kinds of experiments on aging in space and stuff like that. NASA said they don't hire people over 35. I guess they only want to know how 35 year olds will age in space. I don't think they'll get much info that way but who am I to tell NASA what to do.
- I answered an ad for a bean counter. I figured it couldn't be so hard to count beans. They put me in front of a computer and told me to show them how I would use the actuarial tables. I came for beans - what were they talking about.
- I finally decided I was totally worthless and so I became a writer. This, I can do.
