Have a Party at the Beach
Throwing a party at the beach is a cheap and simple way to celebrate your birthday. During the day, your party can relax in the sand, swim in the ocean, or play volleyball. At night, you can set up an intimate party with a bonfire and a small group of friends. Manhattan Beach is ideal for larger parties or outdoor activities such as volleyball. Paradise Cove in Malibu is more secluded, making it ideal for intimate bonfire parties. Both beaches are open daily, though there is a small entrance fee at Paradise Cove.
Karaoke is a birthday classic and can be a healthier way to celebrate than just visiting a typical bar. You can burn calories while you perform or sing along with other patrons.
Caffe Brass Monkey hosts karaoke every night of the week, and features a full-service bar with several original drink creations and TVs that show sporting events. Boardwalk 11 also has nightly karaoke with over 40,000 songs. When it comes time to eat, Boardwalk 11 has healthier menu options, such as edamame, and several light beers on tap.
Have a Picnic at the Hollywood Bowl
According to the venerable venue's website, the Hollywood Bowl is the largest natural outdoor amphitheater in America. The Bowl hosts fireworks throughout the year, along with musical concerts in several genres, including jazz, classical and pop music. Before the show you can enjoy some time outdoors by taking a stroll through the hills above the theater and having a light picnic. Food for picnics is not provided on site, but you can easily bring fruit, salads and meat to use on the outdoor grills. Some picnic areas open four hours before events.
Go Bowling
Celebrate your birthday in retro style at the bowling alley. Bowling parties aren't just for kids; bowling is an active sport and great for large or small groups. All Star Lanes has day and evening bowling. They also have a bar and restaurant to round off your birthday celebration.
Murder-Mystery Dinner
Take the dinner-and-a-show birthday classic one step further with a murder-mystery dinner. At a murder-mystery dinner, a murder occurs and the guests try to solve the crime over dinner. For a healthy twist on this classic, try Keith and Margo's once-weekly murder mystery dinner. They serve a full, four-course vegetarian menu, and you can get in some exercise after dinner looking for clues. The company hosts murder-mystery dinner parties at different venues throughout the year; contact the company for details.
