Start out a trip to Blair County with a bang by visiting one of the amusement parks. Lakemont Park and The Island Water Park located in Altoona offers a smaller amusement park filled with historic roller coasters and a lake. The world's oldest roller coaster calls Lakemont Park home. Leap-the-dips was opened in 1902 and was officially restored in 1999, three years after being named a national historic landmark. The roller coaster is made of wood and offers a creaky, fast ride over hills and around turns. Finish off your day at Lakemont with a paddle boat ride around the lake located in the park. Enjoy the relaxing ride while you pass through beautiful scenery.
If Lakemont proves too tame an experience, then head north from Altoona on Interstate 99 towards Tipton. DelGrosso's Amusement Park opened in 1946 and has been a favorite destination of locals ever since. Boasting more than 30 rides to choose from, DelGrosso's Amusement Park has something for everybody. Miniature golf, go karts and a water park round out the park's attractions. Music lovers take note. In the summer, DelGrosso's Amusement Park offers free concerts on multiple Sunday afternoons. These free shows are not put on by local bands trying to make it, they are country music's brightest stars. Previous acts include: Josh Gracin, Buddy Jewel, Josh Turner, Blackhawk and Blake Shelton.
While amusement parks are not for everybody, Blair County also offers entertainment for sports fans. The Altoona Curve baseball team calls Altoona home. Opening in 1999, Blair County Ballpark is one of the nicest minor league parks in business today. There is plenty of room to walk around without disturbing the crowd watching the game. Constructed of brick, the ballpark hosts many special events to promote games during the season. Special celebrity guests are often featured during games.
Blair County is also rich in history. Located in Altoona is the Baker Mansion. Completed in 1849 by Elias Baker, the mansion still stands today. Long rumored to be haunted, the Baker Mansion hosts ghost story nights. For more information on the Baker Mansion, contact the Blair County Historical Society.
