Casper, Wyoming is located in the central part of Wyoming. According to the 2010 Census, it has a population of 53,569. Being near several mountains and a river, Casper, Wyoming has lots of fun things to see and do.

Casper Mountain

Casper Mountain offers visitors the pleasures of hiking, archery, horseback riding, nature watching, picnicking, and even throwing a barbeque. At the base of Casper Mountain is Rotary Park. This is where a few of the hiking trails begin, and also where Garden Creek Falls is located. Casper Mountain also has a trail for the visually-impaired. Beartrap Summer Festival in Casper, Wyoming

The Beartrap Summer Festival began in 1994 atop Casper Mountain. Every third weekend in July brought bluegrass music, food and fun to Beartrap Meadow. The event also hosts a variety of artists and craftspeople in the marketplace, as well as an area that kids can make supervised craft projects. In 2010, the Beartrap Summer Festival moved to the first weekend in August so please check the website for future dates. See a rodeo in Casper, Wyoming

Casper, Wyoming is host to two major rodeo competitions. One is the College National Finals Rodeo and the other is the Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo. Click on the name of each rodeo to be taken to their website that lists times and details of each rodeo.

Go to the fair in Casper, Wyoming

Not only is this fair home to one of the top rodeos in the country, the Central Wyoming Fair itself is one of the biggest fairs in Wyoming. Everyone will enjoy the rides, music, food and grandstand attractions. The Central Wyoming Fair's website has the dates posted for the next fair, and also lists upcoming shows that are being held on the fairgrounds.

Visit the North Platte River while in Casper, Wyoming

The North Platte River offers activities like fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, and bird watching. White water rafting trips or float trips can be booked with area outfitters like Platte River Raft N Reel.

Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, Wyoming

Casper, Wyoming is home to the Nicolaysen Art Museum and Discovery Center, located on East Collins Drive. In addition to the many exhibits on display, the Nicolaysen also has a discovery center with various classes for the kids. You can also take home a souvenir from the museum's gift shop.

Tate Geological Museum

Another thing to see in Casper, Wyoming is the Tate Geological Museum, which is part of Casper College. The main attraction is Dee, the largest mounted Columbian Mammoth in the world. Dee is almost 14 feet high and believed to be 11,600 years old. Also at the Tate Geological Museum is about 3,000 fossils and minerals on display.

The Pony Express

Remember learning about the beginnings of the mail service in school? You can see history come alive at one of the stops along the Pony Express near Casper, Wyoming. This stop at Fort Caspar is where the California, Oregon and Mormon trails of the Pony Express come together.

Skiing in Casper, Wyoming

The Hogadon Ski Area in located on top of Casper Mountain. It has 600 vertical feet and 18 ski trails. For trail maps, information on passes and rentals, hours and current weather conditions, please visit Casper's official ski area website.

    Although I am not likely to visit Wyoming, I will soon become familiar with a more westerly part of the country than where I live. I will be moving to Nebraska. The word "Platte" rings a bell!
