Things to Consider Before Breeding Your Dog

Bredding Your Dog

So your thinking about breeding your dog? Think you want all them cute little puppies running around your house, and your also thinking you can make some money from this. Thinking of all the good but not thinking in reality of things. First I would like to say if your a first time breeder you need to get some books and read up on what you are getting yourself into. Also find other breeders to talk too. Breeders with the same breed of dog as you have is always best. They have been though the who breeding and puppy process. And most breeder love the breed and also love talking about them. Many will be more than happy to guide you through the process. Some breeds are more likely to need c sections. Is your breed part of this high risk c section breed? C sections are very costly. Than there are shots and deworming that will need to be done when the puppies are at certain ages. Than there is registering your litter with a club. All reputable breeders do this. All this is costly so you want to make sure you have the money to do this in the first place. You must also think of complications that your female dog may encounter during labor, and the toll that it may take on her.

Now lets talk about care. Sure for the first few weeks having these puppies around may seem easy because the mom dog is doing pretty much everything, she is feeding them, cleaning them and doing everything for them. But in a few weeks your puppies eyes will be opening and they will be walking sooner than you know. They will need lots of attention to get use to human contact. You want your puppies to have as much love as they can get before you sell them. This way when potential buyers come to look at the pups they will not be scared of human touch. When the puppies start to walk they are just like human babies, they can and will get into everything. They will also learn to climb, so you will tend to wake up in the morning and find puppies everywhere. And when you have 5 puppies and more is tends to be a 3 stooges episode, as your putting one puppy back the others are getting out.

There is also the attachment factor. The people living in your house are gone to get attached to these puppies. And from personal experience I can tell you that no one ever gets attached to the same puppy, so in the end people are gone to be heartbroken. This is a business and if you intend to make any money you must go in this from the beginning with a business mind.
There can also be health problems the pup or puppies. During birth there can always be complications, and as much as we would like all the puppies to be born healthy sometimes they just aren't. And during birth even though we want to do everything we can for this particular puppy sometimes it is better to let nature takes it course, and it is heartbreaking to have to let a puppy go.
I am by no means trying to deter anyone from breeding their dog. Me and my mom use to breed Chinese shar peis and we loved every minute of it. But it is very hard work. And when the puppy is old enough to be sold even though you know your puppies are going to loving homes it is still sad to see them leave.

Excellent advice for those who aren't familiar with the hard work involved. Breeding dogs is best left to those who know what they are doing; some breeds have a tendency toward hereditary defects that need to be considered.
