Things to Consider when Buying a Netbook

There are many things that you should consider when buying a computer. Most of us have already bought several computers in our lifetime. That means that we have learned the hard way that it pays to do your research in advance and know what you want and what you need. I just purchased my first netbook, and thought that I would share my thoughts and experiences with you if you are considering a netbook yourself. I have always wanted a netbook because they seem like the perfect computers for people interested in writing - small and portable, but still able to hook up to the internet.

Things to Consider When Buying a Netbook: Price

Netbooks are all priced around three hundred dollars. I got my netbook for ninety-nine dollars as a special when my husband bought a new computer from Dell. I added a few upgrades, but not much. With the size that they are, there is not much to add. But, there are specials available, and when you can get one, they can be great. Watch the netbooks that you are interested and see if there are any coupons or sales.

Thinks to Consider When Buying a Netbook: Batteries

I am very happy with the size of the netbook. I ordered a battery upgrade, and did not realize that this added an extra inch onto the back of the computer. This tilts the computer up at an angle. I don't mind that, since that makes it easier to type anyway. The battery also weighs more, so that is something to consider. If you are going to use the plug, which is lighter than a standard computer plug, you could leave the battery at home. My upgraded battery holds about 5 hours of usage time.

Things to Consider When Buying a Netbook: Adding Programs

Netbooks are small, so they usually come without a CD Drive. That means that you need to get a two way cable and download things to it from a different computer, you need to buy an external cd drive, or you need to download directly from the internet. I downloaded the MS Office program as a free trial, but I am not sure if I will be able to convert it to the version I bought. Something to think about.

Things to Consider When Buying a Netbook: Speed and Usage

If you are young, you may not know how slow computers used to be. Modern day computers are powerhouses that crunch and grind faster than ever. Using my netbook makes me laugh. It is like returning to 1997. It is slow and a little awkward compared to larger laptops. They are not for gaming. I am not sure how they are for other media, like music and video. I am happy with the office programs though, Word and Excel.

These are just a few considerations to keep in mind if you are considering a netbook. Don't take them as criticisms. I absolutely love my netbook. Just be aware of what you are getting, and what you will do with it. That can help you to determine whether to buy now or wait for a great deal.
