Things to Consider Before Enrolling in Online College Courses

Helpful Tips for Distance Learning

Lyn Lomasi
Online distance learning courses can be an excellent alternative to attending college classes on campus. There are many benefits, including saving time and traveling expenses. However, there also are some things students should consider and look out for before pursuing an online education. Not all online courses are what they may appear to be.

Accreditation

Before enrolling in an online course, be sure that the program is accredited. There are many accredited online college courses, but some online colleges are not accredited.

Course Outline

Examine the course outline and be sure that it will suit your needs. Though an online college course may be on the topic you have chosen, it may not cover all that you need to know in that field.

Credits

Check to see if the credits earned from your online college classes transferable to another college course of the same type, should you decide online school is not right for you.

Degree

Does the online course you are considering offer the exact type of degree that you need? Be sure the degree is exactly what you are looking for. Some online courses may offer degrees similar to your needs, but be missing a subject area you need to learn. Also, some online college courses offer a career diploma instead of a degree.

Cost

Is the cost of an online degree program feasible for you? Sometimes online college courses are more affordable, but other times they are not. You may need to pay for convenience, depending on the type of college classes you are taking.

Materials

Make sure you know which materials are included in your tuition fees. If there are any extra books and materials you'll need, be sure to have those on time to begin taking your college courses online.

Convenience

Is the online college course you are considering going to be convenient for your schedule? Some online college classes can be taken at any time, but others have a strict schedule. Before enrolling, make sure you know and understand when you are required to take your online classes.

Instructor Availability

Are there instructors available if you need help or guidance? A good online course should have teachers and instructors available to assist with anything related to the classes. If not, you may need to rething your choice of online classes.

Communication

As with teacher availability, other staff and personnel need to be available if you have any questions that cannot be answered by your instructor. You should be able to talk to someone about billing, technical issues, and more.

Assignment Platform

Is the way the assignments will be done compatible with your study habits? If the coursework is completely handwritten and you learn better another way, you should reconsider your choice of online classes. Assignments might be handwritten, typed, or completed online or through a computer program.

Great topic. Online degrees sound fine except for the socializing part. It would work for me, not so much for my daughter.

Excellent points here. Accreditation is so important especially if you're in education.
