Things to Consider If You Go to Tybee Island, Georgia for the 4th of July

Christie Silvers
The 4th of July is right around the corner. Now is the time to start thinking about where you would like to celebrate and enjoy your Independence Day. You may want to consider spending your 4th of July on Tybee Island, Georgia. Last year, my family and I spent our Independence Day on Tybee Island and we had a great time. If you do decide to go to Tybee, here are a few things to consider if going to Tybee Island, Georgia for the 4th of July.

4th of July Fireworks on Tybee Island- Tybee Island has one of the best and biggest fireworks display that I have ever seen. We were staying at the Ocean Plaza Beach Resort, for our yearly summer vacation on Tybee, and we had a room with a balcony on the beach side of the hotel. It was the perfect location to watch the fireworks display. The fireworks were shot off of the end of the beautiful Tybee Island Pier. The fireworks started around 9:30pm and lasted nearly forty-five minutes before it was over. Each explosion produced an even bigger display than the one before it. If you have never seen fireworks reflected by the ocean below then you just don't know what you are missing. They were beauitful and it was hard to tell where the water began and the firework ended. The next night Savannah had their fireworks display and we could see them just by looking over the water to the left of the hotel.

4th of July Festivities on Tybee Island- During the 4th of July celebration, Tybee Island has a wonderfully festive atmosphere about it. On the Tybee Island Pier you will hear local bands playing music, people will be dancing and celebrating and there were numerous vendors set up on the pier

to sale their goods. We saw vendors saling high class sunglass, seashell jewelry and many other beautiful accessories and souveniers. There were even ice cream vendors and the concession stands that sale the alcoholic drinks for us adults (which I don't suggest drinking while it's hot out, trust me). The festivities on Tybee Island, for the 4th of July, could put anyone in the mood for celebrating.

4th of July Crowds on Tybee Island- The crowds on Tybee Island, for the 4th of July, are enormous; which is to be expected on such a vacation spot like Tybee Island during such a huge celebration. If you don't like crowds then you may want to make sure that you simply get lodging that has a balcony. Getting a hotel room, condo or beach house that has a balcony is a great idea so that you can watch the fireworks display without going down into the crowds. I'm fine with crowds, when my children aren't with me, but when they are with me I prefer to stay out of the crowds. Thank goodness for beachside balconies. If you don't mind the crowds, or you enjoy being in them, then head on out and have a good time. You will enjoy it!

4th of July Noises on Tybee Island- Of course, everyone expects a lot of noise when you are listening to local bands play, shopping the festivities' vendors and when you are watching a 4th of July fireworks display. You should also expect a lot of noise, on into the early morning, from the people who go out on the beach after the official fireworks display is over. I don't know if these people were locals or just some overly excited tourists, but we heard store-bought fireworks being shot off on the beach until about 2am the next morning. This was the only time I have ever regretted having lodging right on the beach and was very annoying when I was dealing with three little girls trying to sleep. Luckily, my husband can sleep through a train so he never heard the fireworks on the beach.

In the end, going to Tybee Island for the 4th of July was a fantastic experience for my family. We highly enjoyed the fireworks and the festivities. We could have done without the crowds and the late night noise, but it's to be expected during the Independence Day activities. We will probably go back for the July 4th celebration, but not until our children are much older. If you don't mind the noise and crowds then I highly recommend visiting Tybee Island, Georgia for the 4th of July.

Another tip if you want to be on the beach to see the fireworks is to park somewhere on North Beach and leave the minute the fireworks are over. That way, you'll miss all the traffic on Butler if you have to get back off the island.

I lived on Tybee for over a year and loved every minute of it! The first year we decided to stay in our apartment and watch fireworks, as I had just had a baby the week before and the older child wanted to stick close with mom, dad and the baby. Our apt, above Pizza on Wheels, was too far and had too many trees in the way to see, but there were plenty of locals/visitors with fireworks in our area to keep us happy on our deck. The following year we spent at the beach. Hundreds of people came. Boy were we glad we were walking distance away!!! Agreed, the display was wonderful, lots of fireworks into the night and lots of fun to be had! If you don't make your reservations a year in advance it's likely you won't get a room. Also, for those planning to only stay for the show, park on Wilmington Island or Savannah and ride one of the 5-10 buses that come to Tybee. You likely won't find parking anywhere. GREAT ARTICLE!
