Mapping - More often than not, one uses a GPS unit to navigate around roads and streets especially in places that are unfamiliar. So the first thing you need to look for in a GPS unit is if it has mapping capabilities. This is mostly a standard in GPS units today but you can never be too safe. Most units will allow you to download the maps. The difference between features in the GPS units is quality of the map and the detail. It's best to invest in something that is more advanced than the typical GPS unit.
Accuracy - If you want a GPS unit that is far more accurate and processes data quicker than other GPS units do, look for one that has a 12-channel system. This basically means that the more channels a receiver has, then the more satellites it will be able to refer to when you jot down a location. For vehicular use, a receiver that is mounted on your dashboard is far more reliable than one that has its antenna hidden or tucked away somewhere else. Make sure that you provide a good antenna for your GPS unit because a standard one isn't that effective, even if it is right in front of the windshield.
Battery Usage - If you are going to use your GPS unit in cases that not only involves traveling in your vehicle, then you must consider batteries and some other form of power. GPS units use about 2 to 4 AA batteries and this should last anything between 12 to 24 hours maximum. The better features in the device will naturally drain the GPS of its power. Some units have a battery save mode and it is recommended that you make use of this feature especially if you will be using the GPS unit throughout the day as you are traveling outdoors. In the car, the best power source will be the car battery which can be accessed via the cars cigarette lighter. Some units have the proper cables for this but some don't so be sure to pick a GPS unit that does have this feature out of the box.
Space - Be sure to purchase a GPS unit that has more than just sufficient storage for waypoints and other information that you have to store about specific locations. It is always better to have more space or to have a GPS unit that is capable of being upgraded as far as storage is concerned. Not that much is required for such information and we would recommend that you get any unit that has between 16 to 32 megabytes of space. But, again, if you don't see yourself buying another GPS unit in the future, pick one that has expandability options.
Whether it is a GPS receiver that you will use in the car, or one that you will stow away in your backpack, it is important to know the features you will be getting when purchasing one. This will ensure that you will not have to invest in one every time a new model is released. You can save a lot of money just by getting the GPS unit that suits your lifestyle.
