Things to Do when You Are Depressed

If you suffer from depression, you know that deep, dark feeling of sadness. You may isolate yourself, feel fatigued, sad, uninterested in your daily activities or hobbies and worst of all, you may have thoughts of suicide. When depression gets so bad, sometimes it is harder to treat, because when someone is really depressed, they sometimes lack motivation to do anything at all.

Getting out of bed in the morning might be a chore. It might feel as though you've done so much for the day, even though all you did was take a shower and get dressed. Lack of motivation might prevent you from wanting to do anything, such as household chores, hobbies or socializing with people. However, stopping yourself from doing these things for a long period of time, might actually make the depression worse.

When you are depressed and you feel that you can't get ahead, remember the saying, "This too, shall pass." A lot of people may go through depressing periods in life, some people can get over them faster and some take longer to heal. Here are a few things that you can do that may help you feel better when you are depressed and hopefully help to prevent the depression from getting much worse.

Talk to a psychologist, counselor or therapist. If you are experiencing any type of depression, it is good to talk to someone who is trained in dealing with depression. They may be able to offer solutions to help you break yourself from the depression. It helps to vent to someone who will not judge you, but offer you some kind of treatment to help get you back to feeling good again.

If you can, get out and socialize. When you isolate yourself because of depression, you may become lonely and that can make you feel even more depressed. Call someone who will listen to you on the phone. You don't even have to talk about your depression. You can talk about the weather, the other person you are talking to or anything else that comes to mind. It helps to socialize and have a support system of friends and family.

Try to eat healthier. If you are eating a lot of junk foods or foods that are high in sugar, you might be feeding your depression and making it worse. When you replace those foods with fresh fruits, vegetables, smoothies, healthy snacks and beverages, you may see a significant improvement in your mood. Drinking adequate water is good for depression too because it flushes the toxins out of your body. Drinking enough water helps to keep you hydrated and can make you feel better.

Find a way to distract your mind from negative thoughts. I know this may be hard because when you are depressed, you may not be interested in many things. Finding something to do with your time though, instead of sitting around depressed, might help to change the negative feelings. Even if you do a crossword puzzle or write a poem, it can help to distract your mind. Being idle is not good for depression. Having nothing to do can be depressing.

If you are religious, you could say prayers when you are depressed. Daily prayers and affirmations have helped me to overcome some of my depression.

Read positive, uplifting quotes. Some quotes can really make you think and feel better. It can give you a better perspective on what you are dealing with and give you a better outlook on life.

Exercising is good for depression. Sometimes it is hard to exercise when you don't have the energy, but if you try to do a little bit each day and then work your way up, you might find that your energy levels will increase. When you have more energy, you will feel more motivated. If the weather is nice, it might be good to get out and take a walk in the sunshine. Sunshine provides Vitamin D, which is good at fending off depression.

Visualize yourself being happy. Think of things that used to make you happy. Close your eyes and see yourself happy. Try to take the steps you can to be happy again. Bring some joy into your life. If you like animals, try volunteering at an animal shelter or adopting an animal. Pets can sometimes help you by providing unconditional love.

Try listening to songs that make you feel uplifted or give you inspiration. Having some inspiration can help you feel less hopeless.

A lot of people suffer from or know someone who suffers from depression, so you are not alone. If you think you have depression, try to get the help you need so that it does not get worse and interfere with your daily life or the lives of others around you that could be affected by it.
