Things I Don't like About Gardening

Angel Sharum
I know there are a lot of gardening enthusiasts out there that are going to think I'm crazy. I can't do anything about that. I really don't like some things about gardening and I wanted to talk about with others. Maybe someone else out there shares my views.

There is one thing I absolutely hate about gardening. WORMS! I can't stand worms in any shape or form. They remind me too much of snakes. I have been known to run from the scene if a worm was unearthed during a gardening experience.

I don't much care for dirt either. Getting dirt under my fingernails drives me crazy. I am aware this is a product of my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but it doesn't matter. I will wash my hands numerous times after doing gardening. And even when I try to use gloves, some dirt still sneaks in.

Backaches are a problem also. All the stooping and bending is not good for the back. My lower back especially doesn't enjoy gardening. I have had to have help standing up after a long gardening session.

Another thing that makes my back hurt is lugging around the plants and flowers. Some of those suckers are heavy! I can usually talk my husband into doing the heavy work, but I always try to do my part. I guess I need to plant smaller specimens, but it looks so much better when stuff is already big and blooming.

Flower placement is also a problem for me. I have to get the flowers put in exactly the right spot. I can't have them off by a few inches, or to far forward or back. Again, this is an OCD thing. If a plant is out of whack, it has to be redone. If you don't suffer from OCD you won't know what I'm talking about, but something being out of sync will literally drive you crazy! This makes for a very long day if there are more than one or two plants to put in.

You are probably wondering why I do any gardening at all. I will be honest and say that I don't do much. We haven't put anything out at our place here yet. I have plans; we just haven't followed through on them. I have to catch my husband in a very good mood because he knows it will be an all day affair when we set out to make a flowerbed. I have plans to make a pretty showing this coming spring. We will see how much trouble it causes!

Worms are good for a garden, plus you can fish with them!

I hate when the dirt gets under my nails too so I'll always wear gloves. As an extra precaution, I let my husband do the actual planting--I dig the hole and will water it and he sticks those plants in the ground and puts the dirt around them. This seems to work quite well!

The Woman gardens, but we mostly keep cactus because they are practically effortless to keep. My tarantulas are that way, too.

I like gardening but still enjoyed your article. Like you, I am a bit OCD about flower placement, although I've been pleasantly surprised by flowers which reappear in a new place the next year. :)

No matter what guides/rules I try to follow, I always seem to end up killing plants. :-(
