Things to Do During Those Long Cold Winter Months

Cheap Thrills for Entertainment for When You're All Snowed in

Ariana R. Cherry-Shearer
The snow is falling, and falling….and falling. The heat is running, and you're all cuddled up with your favorite warm blanket on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate. It feels nice and everything, but this is the millionth time you've had to sit indoors for another cold winter day. Your mind begins to wander, and you ask yourself: What's a person to do during these cold winter days that won't cost a fortune?

One fun thing to do when the snow is piled high is to have a movie night! You can either brave the snow, and go check out videos at your local library or rent them at the video store. Or instead of getting out, go through your current collection of movies at home, and pick some of your old fashioned favorites. Call up some friends and have them bring sleeping bags, plenty of popcorn, and hot chocolate!… And if you're a family with children-have them bring their kids too! They can have their movie night in a separate room with some of their favorite Disney flicks, while the adults watch their favorites as well! And since they have all brought their sleeping bags, have a sleep-over and have a big breakfast feast in the morning! Since you're all snowed in anyway, why not fight the snow blues together?

Another task to do during the winter, is to "spring clean" your home! Now this daunting task may not sound like fun, but it sure passes the time! Organize your closet and make sure you have all of your appropriate seasonal clothes handy, and have your Spring clothes ready to make their appearance once warm weather hits the weather thermometers again. Also, you can go through your photos and organize them into your albums that you've been meaning to do for quite some time now. It can be fun looking through your memories especially if you have your family there to do it with you. To get you geared up for Spring and Summer, start going through all of your junk and old clothes that you don't want and get them put into bags or boxes. Find the clothes that you would like to sell at your next "Spring Opener" garage sale, and then separate the ones that you would like to donate to your local charity. Even though cleaning may not be the fun you had in mind, it sure beats the winter blahs and passes away the time when you're all snowed in.

For some creative inspiration, find a hobby or pick up a hobby you might have been left hanging around from last winter. If you love to scrapbook, winter is the perfect time to gather around a table with some scrap booking buddies and share in your photos and fun. With plenty of shiny and colorful stickers, an assortment of paper, and fun accessories, scrap booking is fun when you can create your own photo album of memories. Have a few pals bring some light snacks, find an open area where all of their supplies can be spread out, and scrapbook away to your heart's content. Also, there's jewelry making, knitting, crocheting, card collecting, stamp collecting, writing, drawing, painting, and anything else your little mind can set out to do. Snow is the perfect inspiration behind any craft or hobby.

And if all else fails, there's always the computer and the internet. Get online and check out some of your favorite chat rooms or some of your favorite groups. There's plenty of new groups for all sorts of subjects. Check out Yahoo Groups, and find them according to your favorite TV shows, movies, hobbies, or any other interests. Or you can get into the action of Ebay and shop for some of your favorite things and find deals and steals. Perhaps it could be that new killer summer outfit, decorations and accessories for your home, or even new supplies to support that new hobby you've picked up! And just so you don't' spend all of your money, make some money by selling some of your items you found when you were cleaning and you could make some extra spending cash to have for next Spring. The internet is also home to online music, movies, and so much more, it will be like you still have the outside world at your fingertips even when it's too cold to get out and drive the scary roads on the highway.

So when it's cold out and you don't want to spend a fortune trying to find something to keep you entertained, keep in mind that there are still plenty of cheap thrills around the house to keep you occupied. Cozy with your family around the fire, call some friends for a movie, or just browse through your memories of the past, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the snow falling blissfully upon the ground.

This is possibly the worst suggestion I've seen in my life. You title the article, things to do, while you only tell us one thing!
