Things You Need Before Getting Your First Cat

Roger C.
Having a new pet is always an exciting event, and a cat is no exception. You have probably been waiting for this moment for a while and you have already bought the basic items such as food, toys and a litter box with sand. These items are a good starting point and you and your cat can "survive" with just these, but you need additional items if you want your cat to be truly happy in its new environment and improve the whole experience of adopting it.

One of the "extra" items you will need is a carrier. Chances are you will need to transport your cat in a car eventually to trips or visits to the vet. Many cats get nervous in a car and they can become so active that they can hurt you or themselves, or they can jump out of the vehicle if they have a chance, so it is better to avoid problems by placing them in a carrier.

Another thing you cat needs is its own bed. Cats can do just fine using your bed or your sofa, but they will be leaving fur all over the place. It is better if you get your cat its own place to sleep. It will keep the fur out of your furniture and your cat will be more comfortable because its bed will be its territory. You need to keep in mind that the placement of the bed plays an important role in how much your cat will use it or like it. It needs to be placed in a secure location, or at least where your cat can feel secure. They like closed or semi closed places like corners, so choose a place with these qualities.

Having some grooming equipment is also a good idea. You won't be giving your cat a bath everyday; your cat will hate it and you too, but you need to keep these things close by in case you need them. Include in your grooming kit some shampoo, a brush, nail clippers, a towel and a lotion.

Having a first aid book for pets is also recommended. The reason is that sometimes your cat can get sick out of the blue or injured in an accident so you will need some reference to provide your pet with immediate attention before you can take it to the vet. This advice doesn't apply for cats only, but for anyone having any kind of pet.

Having your pets vet's number handy will also help you enormously in case of an emergency or if you need some advice with your pet. Keep it on a calendar, a sticky note or in the fridge; anywhere you can access it easily.

These additional items will make your experience of having a cat easier and more enjoyable, so keep them in mind next time you go to a pet store.
