Things You Can Do If Your Gas Gauge Does Not Work and You Can Not Fix It.

If your gas gauge does not work, and you are unable to fix it, there are things you can do to get around the problem. Even though it would be better to get it fixed, if you do not have the funds, or if you are waiting for the part to come through the mail you do not have to wait around.

The first and simplest trick you can do to make sure you do not run out of gas far away from a gas station, is take a gas can in your trunk at all times. Make sure there is gas in the gas can because you do not want to have to march to the gas station with it and March back with it full. That way even if you do run out of gas you can use the gas in your trunk as an emergency supply in order to get to the nearest gas station and fill up again. Do not forget to fill up the gas can in your trunk as well.

Another way to make sure that you still have some gas in your car is to make yourself a test dip stick. You can use a wooden ruler. Just make sure that it is nice and clean every time you dip it into your gas tank. You do not want to get any dirt in your gasoline tank because it might gum up your gas line. This is not a weird way to check the gas tank. In fact it was the way that all gas tanks used to be checked. The hardest thing about this though it that you will need a pretty level piece of ground in order to accurately measures how much gas is left. Also you will need to measure your gasoline when your tank is almost empty and when it is full to make sure you know the difference between the two.

The third way, at least if you make routine starts and stops, is to count how many times you can go back and forth from your job and home before your gas tank is almost empty and fill up every time you get close to that number. This is the most risky way, especially if you take a lot of side trips. Remember if you go to another town near you to shop, or do another activity you are going to want to fill up your gas tank and start your count over again in order to make sure you do not run out.
