Things to Keep in Mind Before Seeing 'Tron: Legacy'

Ben Kenber
Well, after years of Disney over promoting this long in the making sequel, "Tron: Legacy" is finally arriving in movie theaters. It has been 28 years since Steven Lisberger's original first appeared on the silver screen, so I am tickled to death that they are making another one. For me, "Tron" was my introduction to science fiction and fantasy movies, perhaps even more so than "Star Wars." To say that I am looking forward to this one would be an understatement. However, there are things to keep in mind before you head into your nearest overpriced movie theater:

1) The story of "Tron: Legacy" is that Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges) vanished back in 1989 while working on a new digital frontier unlike anything we had ever seen before. 20 years later, his grown son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) ends up getting sucked into the computer world like his father did in the original.

2) The main antagonist of this movie will be Clu 2, and it is a more advanced version of the original program that was shown at the beginning of the original. What happens is that Clu 2 ends up turning against Kevin Flynn in a battle for dominance.

3) Bruce Boxleitner does return as Alan Bradley, as you already know from the trailer. Alan is the one who encourages Sam to visit his father's arcade after he gets a cryptic message from him. Bruce will also be reprising his role of Tron in what sounds like a cameo. It makes you wonder why this movie isn't named "Flynn" instead of "Tron."

4) Cindy Morgan, who played Dr. Lora Baines and her computer counterpart Yori in the original, will not be appearing in "Tron: Legacy." As it turns out, no one from the film had contacted her about the possibility about reprising her role, and she had not spoken to anyone involved in the production. At the same time, there has an enormous wealth of fan support for Cindy to be in the film, and there's even a page on Facebook called "Yori Lives" which she has no involvement in. Cindy was quoted as saying:

"I am so thrilled and touched and excited about the fan reaction and about people talking about the first one and how it relates to the second one. I can't tell you how warm a feeling I get from that. It just means so much."

5) The score by Daft Punk is not going to resemble their typical album of dance tracks and techno music. Many reviews of the soundtrack album have expressed disappointment over this. While it's understandable many feel that way, it's still kind of ridiculous. This is their first film score, and like the brilliant work Wendy Carlos did before them, it is a combination of electronic and orchestral music. I have listened to it a couple of times, and I really like what they came up with.

6) This is the most important one: Keep your expectations in check. Disney has spent so much time and money promoting this film that they have made it look like it is supposed to be the best motion picture ever made. The words of Public Enemy still ring in my head:

"Don't believe the hype!"

The anticipation of what is in store can often be more exciting than the finished project. Just go in and expect to have a fun time, and just be happy that Disney decided to make a sequel to "Tron" after all these years.

End of line.

I love the idea of a primer article to give people to read before seeing a movie, this is very cool. Nicely done!
