When diagnosed early, depression can be cured easily. Depressed patients are usually treated with therapy and medication. This may be somewhat costly. But good mental health is not something that one should be stingy with. Cognitive behavior therapists are specialists in psychiatry and they offer treatments like interpersonal talk and cognitive behavioral talk. They produce fruitful results even with short-term sessions. The time taken is usually 10 to 20 weeks. This will allow a depressed patient to begin their recovery path towards good mental health.
The first step to take is of course to visit a reputable psychiatrist. Get the depression diagnosed as to what its type is. It may be clinical depression, bipolar depression, or mood swings. This is done to make sure you know what ailment you are battling with. There are many different depression drugs available in the open market. So you should need to know which is the most appropriate for you.
There is a huge variety of anti-depression medications available for treating patients suffering from depression and related disorders. The popular ones are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The other variety is the trycyclics. Another variety is the MAOIs or monoamine oxidase inhibitors. These anti-depression medications are safer alternatives to tricyclics. They have fewer numbers of side-effects when compared to the tricyclics.
Sometimes, doctors may choose to mix up the various depression medications for effectiveness. This depends mostly on the diagnosis of the patient in question. The various dosages of anti-depression medication can be increased or decreased and it depends on what the psychiatrist finds as most effective. When taking depression medications, it is highly advisable not to mix depression medications or figure out dosages on your own, without consulting the doctors first.
Sedatives or anti-anxiety drugs should not be mistaken for depression medication. Though these sedatives get prescribed often along with depression drugs, they don't play a part in curing depression. Their purpose is to calm one's nerves. This is why the depression patient still needs to consume the various depression medications.
There are some usual side-effects that arise from using depression medication, usually arising from tricyclics. Some patients do not tend to mind the side-effects much. But if it becomes too much irritating and infringing upon one's ability to live normally, it is advisable to consult your caregiver immediately to report these side-effects. Some of the common side-effects that arise because of depression medication are as follows.
Dry mouth - refers to a feeling of being dehydrated. Have drinking water nearby to drink when you feel like it. Brushing the teeth and chewing gum (sugar-free variety) after each meal is advisable.
Constipation - Consume lots of fiber to aid the digestion process.
Blurry vision - It may be temporary. It's easy to pass over. If it bothers you too much, consult your caregiver immediately.
Headaches - It seems to be somewhat common with the new kinds of depression drugs. It may not be worrisome and will go away very easily and over time.
Insomnia - This side-effect usually occurs with first-time users of anti-depression medicines. It usually happens within the first 1-2 weeks of consuming depression drugs. You may then ask your psychiatrist to decrease the dosage level of the medication. It may also be that the time when you take the depression drugs is the cause for this side-effect.
