Things You Need to Know About Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a great way to bond with your newborn baby. It is also a great way to ensure that your baby is healthy. Yet, there are still some things about breast feeding most people doesn't understand, even though most women will offer you an opinion on the matter.

You don't have to agonize over every bite you eat

Yes, you need to eat healthy. Yes, there are some foods and drinks you should avoid. However, you don't have to agonize over every tiny bite you take. Your body is made to produce milk. Your body will send your nutrients to your milk first. This means your baby will have first dibs to these nutrients.

Yes, you should eat vegetables and fruits. Yet you can have a treat once in a while, too.

You may get cramps

You may feel like you are having menstrual cramps while you are breastfeeding. The reason is simple. The same hormone that produces milk also can cause the cramping.

Your breasts can leak and this can be a lot of leakage

This can also be due to your hormones. Each time you think of your baby or babies in general, your body will release a hormone known as oxytocin. This hormone can cause you to begin to leak. Since you will not know when or where this may happen, you could try wearing pads in your bra to help absorb this leakage.

Your sex life may not be as it once was

You may find that your sex life is different now. Again, this can be due to your hormone changes. Your estrogen levels are different now. In the mornings, they are lower while you are nursing. This can cause vaginal dryness. You may also find that your breasts are very sensitive to touch right now.

Nursing is a bit boring

You may not know this, but sometimes the act of nursing can last up to an hour. Plus, babies need to be fed every couple hours, in the beginning. After a few days, this may become boring. Yes, you could learn to entertain yourself while you nurse. Some mothers will check their email or watch television during this time.

It simply may hurt

Yes, nursing can hurt. Your nipples may become irritated and sore, at least at first. If you are experiencing this problem, talk with your OB to make sure you don't have a block milk duct. If she says everything is okay and you are still having problems, consider talking to a lactation consultant.

Yes, breastfeeding can be a special time for you and your baby. Yet, that doesn't mean that there aren't drawbacks to this wonderful time. Beware of them and be ready to conquer them if they arrive.
