The inconvenience of the cable and the attendant problems of disconnection, fraying or breaking, the limitation to user movements and at times the risk of electrocution, made the development of cordless or wireless microphone a very welcome event for all in the audio industry.
The first microphone without a direct connection is supposed to have been invented in German in 1962. Others make counter claims of being the inventor for differing dates. Whatever the date was, the first commercial use of this microphone is attributed to My Fair Lady, a film made in 1964 by Rex Harrison.
There are now numerous types of frequencies used for cordless microphones, like AM, UHF, VHF, infrared and microwave. There are likely to be more frequencies in the near future as technology develops.
The major advantage of using a cordless microphone is the convenience of working without a cord attached. This provides greater mobility and flexibility for the user, especially a performer who does not to keep watching out for the cord or inadvertently tripping. Additionally, there are fewer cables to lay and test for a performance or activity that requires the use of a mike.
Cordless technology faces another drawback: power. The time that can be available for continuous usage is determined by the battery installed in the device. As the mikes are quite small, the capacity of the batteries is likewise limited. Although, current technology has improved and battery life is now quite long, power availability is still of some concern. You need to ensure that the battery installed is fully charged and can still retain a charge for long time. The older a battery is the shorter the charge retention period.
The major drawback is interference. The transmitter in the microphone may interfere with other radio communications systems or fail to operate properly due to the same interference from other radio installations.
In some countries the use of radio frequencies, mainly, AM and FM is restricted. Before using any cordless equipment, you may need to get licensing from a local government authority as some frequencies are restricted.
Before purchasing or deciding on using wireless microphones, you will need to contact a specialist in the field who will give you advice on the available types of microphones, the advantages/disadvantages and may also guide you in making your choice if you can provide the specifications of your need with clarity.
If you already have a system or bought one without getting good advice, consult the equipment's operations manual.
