On one hand, you have a rare coin and want it to look like new, but how do you clean it? You do not clean it. For the most part a coin has value to coin collectors if the coin is in its original state. They prefer to see the normal wear on a coin without taking abrasive cleaners and destroying what nature has created.

If you need to clean your coin for your own satisfaction, never use tarnish remover, jewelry cleaner or polishes for metals. If you take the tarnish from the coin, you will also remove the toning that has formed over the years from copper or silver coins. These harsh abrasives can also leave spots and in some cases, scratches which lower the value of the coin.

The next thing to remember is if you need to clean your coins for any reason, take them to a professional who specializes in coin cleaning. Professionals use a method known as dripping, which is not for the beginning cleaner. You could cause harm to the coins if done the wrong way. You need to remember also, hold your coins on the edges to protect the surface from unwanted fingerprints.

Always remember if you have a coin with wear and tear on the dates and delicate details of the coin, a professional should be consulted and might have a solution for the problem. You could create more damage to the coin if you clean it without professional help. These professionals specialize in rare coins and have their own techniques for helping the coin collectors.

Next, you must remember, if you are determined to clean your coins, try different techniques on coins that have less value before trying the procedure on a valuable coin. If you damage a coin worth ten dollars, you are safer than damaging a coin worth one hundred dollars. If you do clean your coins, never use rock tumblers or vinegar.

Some people try many different things to safely clean coins only to find out it was a disaster. Other things to stay away from are polishing clothes pastes, which are abrasive and chemicals such as sulfuric acid. These will damage your coins and make them of no value to a collector. You will have a clean coin that nobody wants because the value of the coin changes.

The last thing to remember is if you do clean the coin, you must tell any perspective buyers before the final sale. A cleaned coin may have less value if the coin received damage due the cleaning procedure. This why, you should clean the coin, but if you find it necessary, have a professional do it and give you a written statement of how and when they cleaned it and if any damage resulted.

Collectors will want to know all the information pertaining to the coin. You can protect your investments by remembering these five easy tips. If not, you could lose the value of your investments and have nothing but a coin.
