First of all, your head should be protected from head injuries. Head injury is usually the injury which happens to the brain, either by an accident or can be an assault too. There is no hard and fast rule that head injury will take place only by an accident or an assault. It can also happen when there is lack of blood supply to the brain or lack of oxygen. In some rare cases people even suffer from brain injuries by more than one of these mechanisms. Head injury can also be referred as brain damage.
When a head injury takes place, it takes a long time to regain consciousness. It can go from days to months and in some worst cases it can even take years to recover. Recovery from head injuries is possible, but has to be under constant observation. The outcome of a head injury is unpredictable. Some of them recover very soon, and get back to normal, some take months, most take years and many do have tragic ends.
There are two critical periods in the immediate recovery of a head injured person. One is the first two days after the injury, where one has to face the most intensive treatment and the other is a few days later, where one has to face the pain of the swelling brain. Controlling brain swelling is close to impossible. Sometimes, brain swelling may cause death by producing excessive intracranial pressure. You need real heroic efforts to control it.
In most of the cases head injuries lead to the coma state. Currently, there are no medicines that can shorten the duration of coma. And no doctor would be able to predict the duration of coma. People in coma are similar to people under anesthesia. They may react to pain by moving or groaning but, will not have any memory of the pain. Sometimes people in coma show signs that indicate that they can hear and understand, but often these are just reflexes.
Recovery from head injury can take place only gradually. Recovery can stop at any age, and in some worst cases people will survive for years, but would be totally dependant on others, and will not be aware of what is happening in the surroundings. Head injury also includes, brain stem injury, seizures, and spasticity.
To avoid such painful times, it is suggested that you take utmost care of your head. Always wear a helmet when you drive. Make sure you do not take any medicines that will cause sleepiness or drowsiness when you are driving. Never consume alcohol when you are going out. Take utmost care of your head to keep yourself and your family healthy and happy.
