It is extremely important that when parents leave the hospital with their newborn baby, that they are aware of all the necessary information needed. You must discuss everything with your doctor and be sure to ask questions if you aren't sure of something. This is especially vital for first time parents as everything is new to them. My cousin who gave birth about 17 months ago gave me some great information that I would like to share with you.

One of the first things you should learn is how to carry the newborn. A nurse can show you the proper way to hold a baby. Cleaning the umbilical cord is important. You have to make sure to use at least 70% alcohol. The umbilical cord should be cleaned inside and out at least 3 times a day with alcohol and cotton.

Bathing is something you will have to deal with when you have a baby. It is very crucial that you use shampoo and bath liquid that is specifically formulated to a newborn baby's needs. A newborn baby's diaper must be checked at least 2 to 3 hours. This is due to the baby's sensitive skin and you will want to prevent any diaper rash from occurring. Feeding is important here. The baby must be fed every 2 to 3 hours and be sure to replace the milk after 4 hours if the baby has not yet consumed it.

Be certain that before you leave the hospital that you schedule your next visit with the baby. This is usually about a week after you have been discharged from the hospital. This might be include vaccines for your baby. Immunizations should be scheduled from birth up to 2 months old. It's also good before you leave, to have tests done in order to determine if your baby might have any inherited diseases. If don't have this and it is left undetected or not treated, it might interfere with the baby's development so this must be done prior to leaving with your baby. In the instance of my cousin, they took a few drops of blood from her baby's heel. It is also important to find out how to take your baby's temperature in the event that he or she has a fever.

If you are a new parent, you are especially nervous, when dealing with a newborn baby. You will want to contact your doctor even after office hours so be sure to discuss this beforehand so you will know what to do.

Finally, a mother should arrange for someone to be with her for the very first week after giving birth. This is in case the father is not able to there. Ask any friends or relatives who might be available during this time. If not, ask the hospital to see if you can schedule a nurse to do this.
