Things to Look for Before Choosing a Domain Name

If you are new to domaining, and want to learn the tips and tricks in order to make good returns on your domain names, or the websites created under those names, here are some handy techniques by which you can learn the basics of buying good domain names.

Let me ask you questions first, are you doing this for making money online or just for pleasure? If you answer yes to both of these questions, you will probably do much better than doing it only the sake of money or fun. If you find pleasure in this business, it will bring you greater rewards than only doing it for profit. If you are not going to do the domaining business, even then a good domain name is essential for the recognition of your website.

Before purchasing any newer domain, always search for the domain registrars that offer discounts. Although all the registrars offer some discount these days, you need to go for the one that offers the cheapest registration. You can search for these via any good search engine or get help from some online forums that deal with domaining. Members of such forums often know the cheapest and reliable domain registrars. Also, look for the various coupon codes for "extra" discounts. These can also be searched via the same methods as described above.

After selecting your domain registrar, and making an account there, the next question is what is the niche that you are going to promote via that domain name? What are going to be the products or services that you are planning to offer via that domain?

Considering those questions, your domain name should include the reference to your products and services. You may have a well-established business, however, a good domain name will add to its growth. Therefore, always try to choose a domain name that describes your services in one way or the other.

Choosing a domain name with good and appropriate keywords, will help you to get rankings among the various search engines also, because it is now a well known fact that search engines "prefer" the websites or domains containing the keywords that are often searched for.

If adding the keywords containing your business as well as products results in long names, it is always better to register two or more domain names and then you can either redirect the other domain names to the primary domain name that you chose, or you can make more than one websites in order to display your products and services separately. This way, you will be having hold of the keywords related to your business, and believe me; you will not regret it later.

Next question that may bother you can be about the use of hyphens in domain names! Although, it is not a big thing to take care of, yet it has been shown that search engines index hyphenated names a bit faster. However, it all depends upon your personal choice to add hyphens or not. Website visitors can easily remember a long name if it is hyphenated. On the other hand, if you wish to sell your domains later on, some buyers might prefer the non-hyphenated names. Nevertheless, it all varies from individual to individual.

Next comes the domain name extensions. Which one should be used? A .com, a .net, a .org or a .info? Whether a country specific extension should be used or not? Well, the best option is always the commercial extensions and that is a .com domain. Reasons for preferring a .com domain are many; you have the most widely used and well-known extension if you choose a .com. You can also get good returns from a .com domain while selling the domain in future because many buyers still prefer .com extensions. Moreover, for a commercial website or business, a .com makes more sense! However, it all depends upon your preferences and your budget. A bunch of .com domains will cost much more than .info and similar extensions. If you are planning to expand your business via that particular domain, you should go for a .com domain; otherwise, any extension can be taken for noncommercial purposes.
