Things to Look Forward to in 2008

Fabienne Hernandaise
Aside from possible human extinction due to nuclear warfare and Communist China infiltrating the United States, there will be good things happening in the upcoming year, 2008. Elections will be held, palatial hotels inaugurated, and even world renowned soccer championships will take place. The following is what to look forward to in 2008.

Cyprus and Malta will adopt the Euro, meaning two less places for Americans to vacation thanks to the rising cost of the dollar's European cousin. On the subject of currency, the Venezuelan BolĂvar will be scaled down to a ratio of 1 to 1000 to combat its insane inflation rate and this year the Hawaiian state quarter will finally be released.

On February 21st, Europe, North and South America, Western Asia, and Africa will experience a total lunar eclipse. A solar eclipse will take place in Mongolia, Canada, Siberia, and northern China on August 1st. Several space satellites are also set to launch each year to orbit moons of planet in our solar system.

Many elections will take place in 2008 including but not limited to: Georgian presidential elections, Russian presidential elections, municipal elections in France, Spanish general election, Dominican presidential elections, New Zealand general election, gubernatorial elections in Puerto Rico, and of course, US presidential elections. What this means to America is that Putin will step down from Russian presidency, but still be in the background as he chooses his pawn for president. Kind of what Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is doing, but more discreetly.

2008 will definitely by a soccer-filled year. The UEFA soccer finals will be held in Manchester stadium in Manchester and all summer long the Euro 2008 will be taking place jointly in Switzerland and Austria. All European soccer teams go head to head to see who truly the king of European soccer or, football is. The first ever 17 and Under Women's FIFA World Cup will be held in New Zealand featuring teenage superstars take the field. Also, Chile will host the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

On the topic of sports, the Beijing Summer Olympics will be held this year, opening up China to the world. Its economy will experience yet another boom and millions of Chinese have been taking English lessons just to prepare for the event.

Unfortunately, on July 31st Bill Gates will step down from Microsoft after over 30 years of loyalty and dedication. Being rich can only be fun for so long, makes you think.

2008 will definitely end with a bang, a high bang that is. The world's tallest building is scheduled to be completed on December 30th, topping the current title holder, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan. The Burj Arab will stand at 1,922 ft.

Think 2008 will be action packed? Just wait till 2009...
