Things to Do when Your Network is Down at Work

Your system crashes and your server is serving up a dose of the Dark Ages, so what do you do next? If you want to avoid staring into blank space and looking completely stupid you've got to get out of that hell hole of a cube and look busy. And in a tough employment market, you job security may very well depend on it. Here are some ideas to get you noticed in a positive way and improve your overall well being.

Get up and exercise, do some walking and get your blood flowing again. This is a great opportunity to walk off that lunch or supersized snack that has been weighing you down like a rock. Check out Dr. Michael Roizen's Realage website which talks about the positive effects of walking on your attitude as your brain releases endorphins and serotonin. This can break up an otherwise dull and lagging day and give you just the right energy boost to pick things up and stay fresh.

Clean your workspace. There is no better time than right now to sanitize that dingy keyboard. Wipe down everything your hands come into contact with, especially your phone. Germs and viruses can live on these surfaces for a surprisingly long time.

Organize. File unneeded paperwork that has been cluttering your desk. It's difficult to stay focused when you have a zillion things staring you in the face.

The point is to get moving and look useful. Show management you are creative and can think outside the box and still get work done. This could be your calling card to get noticed and stand out from the pack. I recently noticed co-workers engaging in a number of unproductive activities ranging from taking naps to playing waste paper basketball. While I admit the latter is a personal favorite of mine, this is probably a bad idea, especially in a bad economy. You'll need to focus on ways to improve your job security rather than prove to management how expendable you are.

Chances are if you look like you're physically fit and have a clean organized work area, you'll exude a positive image and prove you can get things done no matter what technology throws at you.
