Things You Should Never Tell Your Server at a Restaurant

WRITER
There are some things that you should never do to your server. The servers are trained never to say no to a customer. They might agree to your questions even though it may be against policies. They may assume that they will get an enhanced tip for complying with you. You may even be offending a person without even knowing it. Always address the management for certain issues. They are the only ones that can make on the spot decision and recommendations.

Can I get a discount
Some customers may ask the server to give them a discount on their food. I have experienced situation where customers will ask them not to ring in drinks or side items promising a better tip. The manager constantly monitors the server tickets throughout the shift to see if everything is being accounted for. The server has no authority to issue discount or offer anything for free. What you order is your responsibility to pay for. Never complain to a serve about the price they do not determine the prices. Inform your concerns to the manager on duty.

Can I keep the silverware
You have noticed the amazing plate or glassware and just have to have it for your house. Asking the server if they can sneak it into a carry out bag in unacceptable. If you would like to purchase the plates or glassware ask for the price of the items. The manager will be there shortly to assist you.

How much to tip
Never ask the server how much they think they deserve for a tip. That is only your choice. Asking this question will make the server feel uncomfortable. In no way ask the server if the tip was enough. Just gracefully leave the tip and leave it at that. Any gratuity will be greatly appreciated by the servers.

What is your phone Number
Do not ask a server for their phone number. This is very unprofessional. They are at work and feel very uncomfortable when questions like these arrive. Then the server may feel weird around your table and may affect other customers in the area. Treat your server with respect and always be professional. You are there to eat not pick up a date. Never do anything that you would not want other people to come to your work and do to you.

Take that plate
I have realized one of the rudest things is to hold your finished plate up at the server. The server knows that you are finished with your plate. They are trying their best to make a way to come remove the plates form your table. Some restaurants the servers are not allowed to take plates without a food tray. They may be simply going to the kitchen to grab a tray.

Come over here
Snapping, pointing, and waving are extremely unprofessional. The server will come by your table by observing your body language. If you do need something just simply look at the server and they will make way to come to you. Do not treat the server like a pet and snap or clap. This is very uncomfortable to the servers. This may very well offend them in numerous ways.

Give me the check
When numerous people are fighting over the check it can make the server very uncomfortable. Keep your personal life to yourself. If you would like to pick up the check just simply let the server know before the meal. You can also inform the hostess before you sit down. Waiting for the last minute and arguing over a check can make the server feel very uncomfortable.

... I disagree somewhat about not waving to a server. I'd never snap my fingers but if I've been waiting for quite awhile, I'll at least try to politely get their attention...

I always like to say "nice ass" and smack it up as they walk by. I'm not ashamed by my game!

In my younger days, I managed to hold a waitress job for about a week before I was fired! I have great respect for good servers, it is not an easy job! Good article.

Can't anyone just steal the silverware without making a fuss anymore? Sheesh! (Just kidding. I can't believe some people are still allowed out in public.)

I've seen people do some of these things but some of them I cannot even believe! Asking to take the silverware? How cheap do you have to be to do that!

    Good job!

How awful! I would never dream of behaving in such a way. People can be so rude in restaurants, can't they?

Right on the money and entertaining. I once worked as a servers assistant and had a few of these things happen.
