Things You Should Not Say on Your Cover Letter or Resume

Leave a Better First Impression with a Company You Should Leave These Comments Off Your Cover Letter and Resume

The average person changes jobs 12 or more times throughout their life. Saying that you worked 97 different jobs by the time you reach 50 years old doesn't make you above average. Even though you would be a well rounded individual with many different skills, there are some things you should just keep confidential. There are certain things employers look for when conducting their interview process. These days there is more competition and fewer open jobs than ever, so you'll need a good cover letter and resume that will allow you to stand out.

Remember, your cover letter and resume are a description of your skills and knowledge which may or may not make you a perfect fit for the job that is up for grabs. You are not trying to sell an ipod on Ebay. You are trying to sell yourself to get the job and an income to pay your bills. Time after time job applicants lose out on job opportunities because of poorly written cover letters and resumes.

If you left these unnecessary comments off your cover letter and resume you should certainly have a better chance of making a better first impression with the company you are applying with. Things you should not say on your cover letter or resume:

I have exceptional knowledge of looking things up on Google.

My last four bosses and I are friends on Facebook.

I can get you references from any of my 97 past jobs upon request.

I know the state unemployment phone number by heart.

Copying other people's work is fun and easy for me.

Every time I put a stamp on a fax it always goes through and gives me a confirmation.

After ten years of college, I am 6 credits shy of earning my associates degree.

I am a great team worker and I get along with everybody that leaves me alone.

My availability is flexible as long as it doesn't interfere with my favorite television shows.

I've built up a tolerance over the years where drinking a six pack while working doesn't affect my performance.

I have some pretty popular You Tube videos that are getting a lot of daily hits.

I can copy and paste over 2000 words per minute.

My GPS keeps me from getting lost driving to work.

If you can follow these helpful cover letter and resume tips you should be able to revamp your application. So, next time you are going to apply for another job, it probably would be a good idea to delete any of this personal information that would be better off for talking about over lunch or a card game.
