The thing that comes to mind first is that cats like to climb. If there is a route to their planned destination that takes them around the room twice and is on top of something tall, they would rather take that route than go two steps on the floor. This is a rule among cats. It is a universal law that every cat knows about from birth.
Never let a cat see you have a string on anything. They will chew it into pieces while you are not looking. It does not matter if the string is an inch long. If they see it and you do not, it will be in 4 or 5 pieces the next time you see it. That is if they have not eaten it. Then you will still see it eventually, although you might not recognize it as you clean out their litter box.
Cats understand our language. It does not matter what language humans speak, cats understand it. Every once in a while, they will do exactly what you ask of them. They will perform the task in so much detail that you will know positively that they understood it when you were explaining your desires to them. Therefore, we can assume that the other 99 percent of the time, they choose not to do what you ask. It is too much effort for them.
If you are trying to sleep, that is the time that your cats will decide to run from one end of your house to the other for hours on end. This is interrupted occasionally by two or more of them tumbling together down the hallway. If you have a staircase, they will incorporate this into their chosen route for their races back and forth. If you try to make them stop, they will look at you as if you are insane and continue the instant you go back to bed.
Cats prefer to sleep on something that is higher than the floor. It does not matter if the shelf they pick has something on it. They will gleefully knock over your favorite lamp or figurine to make room for their nap. And, then, 5 minutes after they break your valuables, they change their mind and go sleep on your shoes. Or sometimes inside them.
Cats have their own form of exercise. It is called cat yoga. They will perform this exercise any time and any place. And, they will stop in the middle of it, with their leg over their head to watch you walk across the room. They enjoy flaunting their incredible flexibility in front of humans who can not touch their toes.
Cats bring their humans hours of joy, companionship, and amusement. I can not imagine not having my feline companions with me for as long as they choose to stay. I hope I never have to give up their love and friendship.
