One thing you will want to do for sure is visit the beaches. Most of them are free of charge and you can spend a lot of time swimming. The sand is perfect for your children to make a sand castle. Enjoy body surfing on the water or renting a wave runner to take out and enjoy. There is also great fishing in this area. Cape Hatteres has been rated the #4 best beach to visit in America. This alone makes it worth checking out.
An area known as "The Graveyard of the Atlantic" is in this area. It has been said that over 1,500 boats have crashed here. You can take a diving visit down to look at all of these ships. If you are standing on the shore, you can get a glimpse of the top of some of them at low tide.
Do not miss out on visiting the lighthouses in this area. There are five different ones that you can go to while in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Bodie Island Lighthouse and Cape Hatteres Lighthouse are both painted with black and white stripes. You can only visit the base of Bodie Ilsand, but the Cape Hatteres Lighthouse is open for climbing clear to the top to look around the area. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is also available to climb up to the top inside. The other two lighthouses in the area are called The Ocracoke Lighthouse and The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. You can not climb either one of these, but you can visit them as well.
There are many other things to do here such as visit the local sand dunes and learn about them. There is also a huge indoor aquarium with a shark tank. You can go on bike rides down the various trails. Enjoy local seafood at a restaurant in the area. You will find plenty of things for your family to do while in this area so don't miss out on this great trip!
