We've all taken road trips and it's no secret that if you don't prepare yourself for long trip across the country, then it could turn out to be miserable. In this article I will describe things you should do to make your trip much safer, comfortable and enjoyable. We will discuss the vehicle maintenance, how to prepare for a travel emergency and travel safety.

When you're planning a long driving trip in your vehicle, the following are some very important things that need to be accomplished to prepare for your trip.

  1. Make sure your vehicle is in top operating condition. If there are any repairs that need to be made be sure to have these repairs completed a couple weeks before you leave. Have your oil changed and all your fluids and belts checked.
  2. Check the tires on your vehicle and make sure that the air pressure on each tire is correct. Also check to make sure that the tire tread is sufficient to complete the entire trip. If it's been a while since you have your tires rotated it would be smart to go ahead and rotate the tires before leave.
  3. Make sure all of your lights are working correctly and check your windshield wipers to ensure their operational.
  4. Pack a safety/travel kit in your truck. Include in this kit first-aid items. Make sure you pack a blanket, pillow and some extra food and water.

It is very important to prepare for a travel emergency. You never know when you are going to break down with vehicle problems so you have to be prepared. Make sure that you travel with a working and fully charged cell phone. Also, let a friend or a family member know what time you left on your trip and also what time you're expected to arrive at your destination. This way, if something happens and you don't show up at your expected time and let's say you're cell phone is not working, or something serious has happened, then somebody knows to start looking for you.

Remember, travel safety needs to be a priority. Make sure you have a plan for a travel emergency. Avoid sleeping or taking naps at rest stops. If you need to pull over and take a nap in your vehicle, then try to do it in a populated area. Better to be safe than sorry.

Make sure that each time you stop for fuel or to eat you walk around your vehicle and give it a once over. Just look at the tires and observe the vehicle as you walk around to ensure that nothing obvious is wrong. Always pay attention to your surroundings and if traveling in a group, try to stick together. Complete these items before traveling and following these travel safety and travel emergency suggestions will provide you with a very enjoyable and successful trip.
