Michelle Tucker
The Rio Grande Valley is located in the southern tip of Texas, along the border of Mexico. The largest cities of the Rio Grande Valley are Brownsville, McAllen, Harlingen, Mission, Edinburg and Pharr. Here is a list of things to do in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

The Basilica of our Lady of San Juan Del Valley National Shrine is in San Juan. The Shrine was built because of a statue of the Virgin Mary that is believed to have brought a girl back to life in 1623. Many people flocked to the statue and hence a shrine was built to accommodate those people. In 1970, a plane crashed into the Shrine and completely destroyed it. No one was hurt and the statue was saved from the rubble completely intact. A new Shrine was built in 1980. The Shrine seats over 1,800 people. It was named a National Shrine in 1998.

Dodge Arena is located in Hidalgo. Dodge Arena is your ticket to see the hottest concerts, sports and other events. The arena also has 508 club seats and 26 private luxury seats.

The Gladys Porter Zoo is located in Brownsville. They are open 365 days a year, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-5:30pm. Admission is $9 for adults, $6 for children ages 2-13, $7.50 for seniors and under 2 are free. There are always events and shows going on at the zoo. The neat thing is that they have rare and exotic animals that you won't see at other zoos such as Komodo Dragons, Bushbucks and Red Brocket Deer.

Sea Turtle, Inc. is located at South Padre Island, Texas. They as closed on Monday but they are open Tuesday through Sunday 10am-4pm. There is a donation of $3 for adults and $1 for children over the age of 4. The big exhibit here are the sea talks which last about 30 minutes and talks about what Sea Turtle, Inc. does and teaches about the different species of turtles.

Laguna Madre is named after two shallow bays that run alongside the Gulf of Mexico. The name is translated into Mother Lagoon. The Laguna runs 130 miles long into Mexico. It is a beautiful place to a drive, a picnic or to go boating.
