Things to See on the Island of Guernsey

Paul Sloane
If you get the opportunity to spend a long weekend in Guernsey then here are some recommended sights:

1. Wonderful beaches - there are many splendid sandy beaches. Some favourites are Petit Bot on the south coast and Cobo Bay and Port Soif on the north coast.

2. The Guernsey Tapestry in St Peter Port. The millenium tapestry illustrates the history of Guernsey over the last 1000 years in 10 embroidered panels.

3. The Fort Grey Shipwreck Museum. Fort Grey is a Martello tower on the west coast built in 1804 to protect the island from the French. It houses a small museum with details and artefacts from the many shipwrecks around the island.

4. The walk around the reservoir. If you can find the car park by the barrage then you can enjoy a wonderful 2 mile walk in woodlands around the island's rservoir lake.

5. Castle Cornet. This ancient royal fortress stands guard over the harbour in St Peter Port. It was beseiged for 9 years during the Civil War. Today it houses four interesting museums.

6. Jerbourg Point in the south-east corner of the island offers marvellous views across to Sark, Jersey and France.

7. Herm is an idyllic small island which is a short ferry ride from St Peter Port. It is 4 miles in circumference and has no cars, 1 pub, 2 cafes, an old chapel, beautiful beaches and enjoyable coastal walks.

8. Victor Hugo's house in St Peter Port offers guided tours of the house where the great French writer spent 14 years in exile.

9. The German Occupation Museum tells the story of life under the German occupation from 1940 to 1945.

Guernsey is an easy island to drive around. The food is excellent and the people are very welcoming. It is highly recommended for a restful vacation.
