Centennial Park:
Located on West End Avenue in Midtown Nashville, Centennial Park is a great place to walk dogs, jog, or have a picnic. The Parthenon building, a scale replica of the original Parthenon, is the centerpiece of this pristine park. For a small fee, visitors can enter the building to view art and a very large Athena statue. Centennial also hosts events such as plays in the park, foot races, and festivals.
Fairgrounds Flea Market:
The Tennessee Fairgrounds regularly hosts a very large flea market spanning several buildings and spilling outdoors as well. Carnival food is to be had from vendors located throughout the area. This flea market is an intriguing mix of art, collectibles, personal supplies and junk. Great fun!
The Ugly Tomato Festival:
One of the best things about summer is all of the strange little events that pop up around town. The Ugly Tomato Festival is held at the Nashville Farmer's Market and showcases none other than ugly tomatoes! They encourage everyone to bring their own homegrown ugly tomatoes to show off as well. This is a one-off event. Info can be found at http://www.nashvillefarmersmarket.org/index.html
Frist Museum:
The Frist Museum, on Broadway in Downtown Nashville, is a great place for adults and kids alike. There is generally a day or two a month that is free of charge, and the exhibits rotate regularly. They host an Art-Tini event now and then as well, with martinis and discussion on works of art. Upstairs houses a second gallery and a children's area that is fun for kids and adults, too. Many times there are couples on dates decorating pictures or playing with toys, and I myself have been known to screen-print a piece of paper or two!
Musicians Hall of Fame:
The Musicians Hall of Fame is adjacent to the Sommet Center and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Opened just a few years ago, the Hall of Fame pays tribute to musicians and their instruments. Some items include pictures of musicians in Nashville and items from Peter Frampton and Charlie Daniels. Its more specific than other museums, but a must-see for musicians and music buffs alike.
Nashville is a wonderful city, full of many types of attractions and a diversity of people and activities. I hope this list helps you get started on your visit to Nashville!
