Things Seniors Can Do to Stay Active and Busy

Alyssa Russo
I am not elderly or a senior citizen, but I have volunteered and worked with the elderly for quite a few years. I have a lot of respect for the elderly and I really enjoy working with them and hearing the stories they have to tell. I have learned a lot from watching, observing and talking with them.

One thing that saddens me to hear, is that some elderly people become very depressed because they become bored with life and also feel lonely. I've thought of some ways for seniors to become active and possibly make new friends, so that they will be less lonely.

Volunteering. If you feel capable of doing this, it would be very rewarding for you to volunteer in your spare time. There are nursing homes and retirement communities that could use the help of a volunteer. I think it would be a nice idea if you could go and visit someone in a nursing home who may be lonely or maybe help them with out with some social activities. You might make yourself a new friend.

Find a senior citizens club to join. Sometimes if you check in the local newspaper, there are senior clubs that get together and go on bus trips. It is a good way to meet new people and have some fun and entertainment in your life.

Adopt a pet. If you feel that you are able to take care of an animal, maybe you could try adopting an older animal from an animal shelter. It would give you something to take care of and you will probably get a lot of love from your pet in return.

If you can afford it, a retirement community would be a nice place to live because they offer daily activities to keep you social and active. I have an aunt who is a widow and lives alone. She moved to a retirement community and now she is active and has made many new friends. She is busy a lot and does not feel as alone anymore.

Cook or bake for your grandchildren or children and invite them over. If you have grandchildren or children that live nearby, maybe you could invite them over for dinner once a week. My grandmother is one of the best cooks that I know. She lives alone and I love when she invites me over to eat a meal with her. She teaches me new things about cooking and we get to spend time chatting. I also feel good because I know that she likes having someone to share a meal with, because eating alone can sometimes get lonely. I also think that food brings people together and by sharing your food with your loved ones, it gives you the time to sit down and bond with them over a nice meal.

Talk with your neighbors. If you have any neighbors who are also seniors, maybe you could invite them over to talk or chat. If you get to know your neighbors, or you already do, then see if you can become friendlier with them and possibly ask them to go places with you or do things together.

Play tennis, go bowling, play golf. There are a few sports that seniors enjoy doing. These sports will help you to stay active and fit.

Go for a walk. Can you walk around your neighborhood? See if you can find yourself a walking partner and take a walk with them a few times a week. It will be good exercise for you and might help to improve your mood as well.

Take a class, learn something new. Did you ever want to learn how to crochet or knit but you never did? How about learning how to speak another language, maybe a language from your heritage? You could possibly look online for classes in your area that you might be interested in. You are never too old to learn something new and learning new things keeps your mind occupied.

Join an exercise or fitness program for seniors. Exercising can help you to stay fit and healthy and also can improve your mood. You might find that after exercising, you feel happier and have more energy. You could even take a dance class to get your body moving.

Do crossword puzzles and other games. Crossword puzzles, word search puzzles and even jigsaw puzzles are good at helping you to sharpen your memory and keep your mind active.

Get together with friends. It is good for you to spend time with people and socialize, especially your friends. Invite your friends over for a game of cards, or some tea. Keep your friendships alive by doing things together and calling each other to check up and see what is going in each other's lives.

If you are married or have a significant other in your life, go on a date! Go to the movies, out to dinner, play miniature golf together. Going on dates is a great way for you to keep your relationship alive and create more memories for you to share with your partner.

If you do not have a partner but are interested in finding one, then maybe you could join a 'singles' group. Look for groups that are geared towards seniors who are single. There may be groups in your area, if you look in your local newspaper or online in a search engine.

Staying active and busy is important for seniors to keep their mind and body going. It will help you because it will prevent you from becoming lonely, depressed, bored or dissatisfied with your life. If you become more active, you might notice that you have more energy and would like to do more things. Don't let yourself get down, do something to keep yourself occupied and take care of yourself as good as you possibly can.
