Things to Do when You Are Sick at Home

Alyssa Russo
If you are sick and in bed or just lying around the house, here are a few things that you can do to occupy your time. It might help you a little bit to distract your mind and focus on something else rather than feeling sick.

Do crossword or other word puzzles. Sometimes the newspaper has word puzzles in it or maybe someone could pick you up a puzzle book so you can keep your mind occupied.

Read a book or magazine. Are there any books or magazines lying around your house that you never have the time to read? Now would be a good time to open them up and start reading.

Listen to peaceful music. If you have a relaxing or peaceful songs, play them to soothe your mind and help you to relax. One time when I was real sick, it was hard for me to fall asleep. I put on a cd that I had with the sound of the ocean and soft, peaceful instrumental music in the background. This helped to calm me and help me fall asleep.

Write in your journal. If you have a journal, write down a list of your favorite things in it. You could write what you favorite songs are, your favorite television shows, your favorite food, favorite vacation spots, etc. This way when you look back on your journal in years to come, you can see what your favorite things used to be and how things may have changed.

Look up some positive quotes online. Search for some uplifting quotes that make you smile. Sometimes when we are sick and in the house for some time, we can tend to feel down. Read some inspiring quotes that will help to elevate your mood.

Watch a funny movie. I've heard and believe that laughter is a great medicine. Do you have a favorite comedy movie on dvd? Pop it in and watch it. Maybe you can find a channel that has some stand up comedians that can make you laugh. There may even be some funny cartoons on. I believe that laughter has a healing effect.

Call or email someone. Maybe you could call or email a friend or relative and see how they are doing. This might help you to feel a little less lonely while you are sick. You may even get some support and help if you need it. Sometimes it can give you a little comfort when you hear someone say "I hope you feel better."

If you have been sick for awhile and have trouble getting out to buy groceries, you can order groceries online. If you feel safe shopping online, there are grocery stores that will deliver groceries to your house. I know that some supermarkets deliver groceries. You may have to pay a delivery charge. I know some stores do offer free delivery for first time customers. I used this service when I was ill and I really liked it. It does depend on where you are located. They may not deliver to certain areas. You can check it out online in a search engine if you are interested.

Take some online quizzes. See if there are any silly, fun or even serious quizzes that you can take to pass your time. Test your smarts with an intelligence quiz. There are so many quizzes online.

If you are interested in astrology or reading horoscopes, check your horoscope for today, the rest of the month and the year. There are some websites that will give you your horoscope readings for free.

Write a poem or a short story or write an article for Associated Content. See if you can get your creative juices flowing while you have the time.

Play free games online and compete with other people. Some games have chat rooms so you can chat with other gamers. This might be a great way to feel less lonely and occupy your mind.
