South Haven's history was first as a gritty lumber and mill town, in the 1850's, with little attraction for the "citified" tourist, but that changed in time, according to the South Haven Tourist Web Site. It wasn't long before the old growth lumber was cleared in the area and pastures were planted with apple and peach trees and blueberry bushes. Lumber ships were replaced by those carrying human cargo of tourists intent on enjoying the beach and the smaller town atmosphere.
The popularity of the automobile in the 1920's and 1930's saw the creation of the auto camp, the precursor to today's RV park, as well as the tourist camp, identified by it's small cabins huddled together in a group off the busier -- and only sometimes-- paved roads.
Over the years, the roads improved and travel times lessened, and gradually the tourist ships gave way entirely to visitors arriving by automobile. South Haven is a small town that lends itself perfectly to a relaxing road trip.
Today, South Haven has not only an abundance of outdoor things to do, but also has enough shopping and antique shopping, restaurants, kids activities and places to stay to appeal to a broad range of tourists.
For Kids:
Family activities for kids in and around South Haven can range from the fun and obvious -- enjoying the beach and Lake Michigan waters-- to spending a day at Fideland Fun Park, an amusement park with bumper boats, miniature golf, go-carts and much more. The Kal-Haven Trail, a State Park, which winds along an old railroad right of way, can be hiked or biked all the way between the two cities of South Haven and Kalamazoo, which is about a 20 mile distance.
If a more sedate adventure is called for, there are at least two places in town where you can paint pottery, Color Me Yours and Decorative Treasures, and another outlet, Creative Sparks, which can help you make your own art and bring it home as a self made souvenir.
Want to wear the kids out so they sleep at night and you can party? Try Hole in the Wall Paintball Field, Gingerman Raceway ( simulated country road race track), and even Martin's Jet Ski & Boat Rentals.
Add a dash of history and culture at the Michigan Maritime Museum, which tells the history of ships and commerce across the Great Lakes.
South Haven has a great combination of activities for kids, while being able to keep adults interested.
For Shoppers:
Want an old book in South Haven? How about an antique chair to sit in while reading your old book? Whether it's the old or the new that you're seeking in South Haven, you can find it. The Hidden Room Book Shoppe and Black River Books can provide the reading material, while at least four or five antique stores can offer a comfy old chair, including At Last, A&A Antiques & Collectibles and Murphy's 2 Floor Antique Mall.
Other shopping in South Haven includes an old fashioned variety store and clothing and boutique shops. It makes for a great variety of shopping.
For Lovers:
You've got Lake Michigan, a long stretch of beach for walking, beautiful sunsets, a romantic lighthouse, so what else could lovers want? How about a nice place to stay? South Haven has at least twelve Bed & Breakfasts, which are converted from the huge Victorian Mansions that line its quiet streets. Prices will vary widely depending on the season. Look for possible lower rates midweek.
If you want something with a little history attached, try the Hotel Nichols in the center of town. The Hotel Nicols has welcomed guests for over a century, and has shops below that have included, over time, an ice cream parlor and a Western Union office. Its fourteen rooms are unique and the hotel says there is a story behind each room. You can't beat it for convenience, though, as you can overlook South Haven's historic downtown and are a walk across the street from shops and dining.
South Haven is a very romantic vacation for those who can't get to the islands but still want the beautiful beach and laid back atmosphere.
For Outdoors:
The list of outdoor things to do in South Haven. To start, it goes back to Lake Michigan. Swimming, water sports and boating are the favorites. Boats and jets skis can be rented or chartered.
Golf can be played at the near-by South Haven Golf Club and Glenn Shores Club, both public courses.
For those who need a more intense outdoor fix than whacking a little white ball across closely cut grass, Van Buren State Park is just a few miles outside of South Haven. There are some very scenic hiking trails that take you within view of Lake Michigan and some sugary white sand dunes, as well as picnic areas and places to swim. Your new hiking shoes will get a good break in here.
Finally, nothing beats a low intensity stroll along the tree lined streets which overlook Lake Michigan. Early in the morning or sunset are great times for this. There are benches every so often to rest and just relax and take in the beauty of the area.
South Haven's activities don't stop at Labor Day, however. Winter can be fun time to visit. No crowds will keep you from your favorite restaurant, many of the shops are decorated for the holidays, and the rates at local hotels will generally be less. Not to mention enjoying the beauty that comes from a fresh layer of snow covering buildings and the landscape -- the perfect Michigan winter vacation setting.
Places to Stay:
A number of moderately and mid-priced hotels surround South Haven, in addition to the B&B's and Hotel Nichols . Be sure to make reservations during the summer, or during such popular events as the annual South Haven Blueberry Festival, which takes place in early August.
When You Go:
If coming from Chicago, allow at least 2 nights, due to the distance. If you come from Detroit, allow at least 3 nights. Summer auto travel is subject to road construction along I-94 in Michigan and Indiana. Winter driving is subject to "lake effect", which can sometimes pile a lot of snow quickly on the roads and lead to white outs.
Plus, Plus, Plus:
South Haven has a friendly small town atmosphere and is priced less on the average than its neighbor up the Lake Michigan coast, Saugatuck, for the same type of activities. South Haven is a perfect place for a quick escape for those living in Chicago, Indianapolis or Detroit.
